@ronhenzel “…their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them…” — Romans 2:14-15 Between Adam and Moses people had the works of the Law written on their hearts. Thus they were without excuse. The basis of the condemnation by the Law…
@ronhenzel …is knowledge of right and wrong. We read: “because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.” Rom3:20 And in another place:
@ronhenzel “But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, worked out in me coveting of every kind. For apart from the Law sin is dead.” “For sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.” Rom7:8,11 (Please read in context)
@pbcmike98 The question in Ro 5:13-14 is: “Why did people die during a time when there was no law that carried a death penalty (i.e., between Adam and Moses?”
@pbcmike98 Paul’s answer is: “Because Adam’s relationship to his seed sets the pattern for Christ’s relationship to His seed.” In other words, Adam is a type of Christ. Types are patterns.
@pbcmike98 And the pattern is that Adam’s sin was charged to his seed resulting in both physical and spiritual death, while Christ’s righteousness is credited to His seed resulting in both physical and spiritual life (cf. Ro 5:15-17).
@ronhenzel And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the gracious gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification. Rom5:16 You see… 1/
@ronhenzel 2/…the parallel. But in order for justification to happen there must be faith. Rom5:1 2+2=3+1 but if I add something to one side I must add it to the other to balance what is being said. Paul assumes we know how both justification and wrath come about since he has proclaimed…
@ronhenzel 3/…it in the first 4 chapters. You sin you die, you are judged. And… You believe you are justified you escape judgment. So Paul already established the HOW for these verses. But you want to add guilt unearned. It’s not in the Bible.
@ronhenzel So back to v16. How does from Adam’s sin arise condemnation? And How does the gift result in justification? The last one we all agree, it’s thru faith. The first one, Paul makes clear that it’s thru personal sin. Rom1:18,32; 2:5-6,12; 3:19. And later we read it in 6:23.
@pbcmike98 If by “through faith” you mean “because of faith” or “based on faith,” no, we don’t agree. Faith doesn’t cause justification. Christ causes justification. He causes it when the Spirit He’s sent puts us “in Him.” And this is because of Him, not us.
@pbcmike98 ³⁰ And because of him [God] you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, —1 Corinthians 1:30 ESV (cf 1:27-29, 31)
