Sometimes, fundamental CS culture is good. Today I actually used a Dekker’s lock in real code because it was faster than a spin lock because it’s not doing atomics and I happen to only need to synchronize 2 threads.

I’m glad the pain is shared though. We find missing barriers in GCD every year for a decade or so. With each SOC and the OOO window going a little more crazy each time. (👋🏻@rokhinip or is it too soon?)
And I’ll start with a freebie: the venerable voucher user data attribute, is no longer. I know it had already gone out of favor recently, but now it’s really entirely gone. 🍻 Let’s pour one to voucher user data🍻
For the record, and I will get a lot of colleagues mad, I do eat pizza with pineapple and the engineer who wrote that panic string did buy me a slice of it. I’m fine with not calling it pizza though, I just like it.
Okay, now with all my devices updated, I’m here to confirm that macOS -> iOS ‘Universal Control’ is legitimately the most holy-shit, mind-blowing thing Apple has pulled off in years. Honestly, maybe ever. It’s that well done.
It’s one of those things that seems like it can’t possibly work as well as it does. And yet it does. It’s the promise of “it just works” epitomized. It’s something that probably a hundred little bits of software have made possible over years of tweaks to macOS and iOS. It’s WILD.
When you describe it, it can sound ho-hum. So… a second monitor? But it’s a second monitor that runs iOS (or macOS as it works both ways!). And you can just instantly and seamlessly navigate the two. It breaks your brain not because it’s complex but because it’s so simple.
