Last month John #Healey resigned as Defence Secretary in protest at Keir Starmer's refusal to commit himself to spending 3% of GDP on defence by 2030. Wes #Streeting publicly backed Healey. But Andy #Burnham won't guarantee the 3% target either. This time though, Healey and Streeting have said nothing. Does that mean the fight for a credible defence policy is over already. And more proof that Labour can't be trusted with the defence of the realm ?

Farage was painfully slow to realise that he'll need some kind of deal with the Tories to form a government. Now the penny's finally dropped he's panicking. Conservatives are rightly appalled by his destruction talk. But if it's a choice between a Labour-led coalition and Farage as Prime Minister I'll hold my nose and forget the insults in the national interest.

I never cease to be perplexed by the obsession of print journalists with their television counterparts. There are column inches a plenty today about Naga #Munchetty's decision to leave #BBCBreakfast tv for a new job as a radio presenter. Good luck to her but is it news that someone who spends a good part of her life on a sofa will now be sitting in front of a microphone ? She reports and discusses the news. She should not be a story herself.

In a way I'm surprised by Andy Burnham's refusal to call a general election. He should learn from recent political history. Gordon Brown made a huge mistake by not seeking his own mandate after Tony Blair stood down. From then on Labour's prospects steadily diminished as the parliament went on and when Brown had to go to the country in 2010 he suffered a heavy defeat. It took Labour another 14 years to return to power. As a member of Brown's cabinet Burnham ought to remember that.

Well she's been sacked by Accounts and she probably can't cook so she can't work in the canteen. It's a difficult one isn't it ? Her two years as Chancellor ruined so many businesses and there aren't many left which could afford to give her job. Looks like Benefits Street for Rachel !

The #BBC is playing for high stakes : attempting to prove that Donald #Trump incited the attack by his supporters on the United States #Capitol on January 6 2021. Most legal experts in the US believe the Corporation will find it virtually impossible to gather enough evidence to win its case. Have BBC bosses not taken into account that the Senate acquitted Trump of incitement ? So why risk a humiliating defeat and a huge bill for costs. No doubt to be paid by licence fee payers in the UK.

Interesting that Kemi #Badenoch has blocked Sir Grant #Shapps from becoming a #Conservative candidate. Is Badenoch being harsh and intolerant ? I don't think so. Shapps represents so much that went wrong with the Tories in their 14 years in power. They totally lost their way and the voters told them in no uncertain manner what they thought of that at the last election. The only way forward for the party now is ditching the past, People like Grant Shapps have had their day.

It was legally called the Scottish Executive until the elections of 2007 when the SNP won the most seats and Alex Salmond became First Minister. His administration soon began using the term ' Scottish Government '. That was legalised by the Scotland Act 2012 as the UK government became increasingly worried by the rise in support for independence.
