Any freelance writer who says they are only making a living on journalism, I have questions! The Post, the Atlantic, The Times - you get $500 for a piece for them, and it's a lot of work. Do you have "family money?" Do you live in a very cheap place? What is your secret?
Wow, this took off. Reminds me of the Twitter of Yore when people actually were helpful and honest. To those who ask what other kinds of writing pay, perhaps look to foundation/annual reports. And if I keep at it, yes, I think it may be time to raise the rates, or say no! Thanks!
@rkobell The secret is finding a lucrative niche. If the publication can generate a lot of revenue from your content, you'll be paid much better.
I am 50 hours in to a freelance story and I have not written a word. I will put another 5 to 10 hours in before I write a word. Lucrative it is not. But it will be good.
@rkobell 500 US American dollars? That’s it? In this economy?
@rkobell I have spent most of the last 6 years in poverty. My 2nd career layoff put me there. I had a job for 1 year since then and was laid off from that last year. I'm on and off public assistance and spend hours every week in line for free food.
