They introduced me to gaming, Gundam, niche yaoi/yuri, horror and classic movies I'd never heard of. We shared the things we loved with each other and built community around varied interests. Did we disagree sometimes? Yep, but it didn't devolve into the shit you see here.

Also, I spent a lot of my early years interacting with REAL PEOPLE. I met some of my friends in online chatrooms and our friend groups used to meet up at AN or Fan Expo. We weren't in one dedicated fandom and I learned about a lot of other people's hobbies and hyperfixations.

People telling me fandom has always sucked have their own reasons, but I can only speak for myself. Before fandom was relegated to a few social media apps, we used to have forums and small self-made websites. It was easier to interact with like-minded people back then.
