My own comment is targeted at the Hausa and Fulani settlers in the Middle Belt For years they have been claiming to be indigenous to our areas, claiming that they own it and that they will dominate the natives When people call for restructuring, they refuse, when others call for secession, they oppose it. When people say let there be equitable resource allocation, they fight it It is a word of caution to them to have respect for indigenes in their own space be it in a united country or not.

I am baffled by this comment section. The comment section below shows that most Nigerians do not understand the country in which they live in They don’t understand why states were created and why most groups advocated for them in the 50s They also don’t understand that local governments were created as an alternative to state creation in the 70s either They also do not understand that Nigeria is a country without significant law enforcement, and that government has relied on the people’s ability to self regulate and do good which is why it isn’t able to handle large scale indigene vs settler riots That is why comments about owning peoples land is literally petrol waiting to be lit. It is also why indigene vs settler problems in Kaduna, Plateau rarely can be contained by the police or military for days after it erupts Most of the problems in the Middle Belt comes from comments from Hausa and Fulani settlers, about owning the land of the indigenes Nigerians also don’t even understand the concept of incitement and that we have cautioned about it for years And whenever I talk about it, there is one idiot who accuses me of encouraging it Why will a good student of history not understand why causes these riots and seek to deescalate We will need to find constitutional solutions for these issues or it may be what leads to the country imploding asides terrorism

I dont think it is wise/cool to brag about taking over another person's indigenous land. "We own this place", "we own all the buildings in this place & the people have nothing". If someone says that to my people in Southern Kaduna, I will be rightly incensed. Wisdom should lead.

It has over 350 ethnic nations in it. Regardless of the system of government or how opposed they are to secession, it doesn’t change this fact Mutual respect for each nations ethnic space will help us achieve greatness together

So in your opinion, my reaction to it is the bigger issue than the issue itself Distrust for land grabbers who have shown time and time again that they want to expand is not anxiety, it is common sense and logical thinking The solutions we have brought here, are respecting the indigenes of every space, decentralization of power and regionalism, and being proud of your original habitat Most have not adhered to these principles and that’s why the problem has refused to go away

I think those of you in the incense of reacting to "Taking over land" bring more attention to the matter than anything else. And its rooted in having an anxiety that building strenght. Some of the solutions you identified as you can see haven't fixed anything since the 60s.

First we have to note that this is a High Court Decision It is going to be appealed and scrutinized more properly as it progresses to the Court of Appeal and then finally, the Supreme Court. Secondly, no court can assign indigene status to a group of persons by virtue of birth in a place. Indigene status is on the basis of ancestry and not birth. What is interestingly omitted in the case, is that the British colonial authorities called the migrant group in the Jos area squatters in the 1921 provincial report so historical context does not agree with the present court decision. Now this is huge. What is also ignored is the Hausa settlers have confirmed their settler status in the 2004 Peace and Reconciliation Commission and as such, this is not in debate The problem around this arises from the fact that the Constitution does not clearly define indigeneity Since the Constitution is ambiguous on the matter, local governments have developed their own practice regarding indigene certificates It will be interesting to see subsequent rulings affect the practice Within the context of the ruling in Jos, Plateau State, the practice takes into consideration multiple commissions of inquiry decisions, truth and reconciliation commissions and historical records of the area in accessing who is an indigene or not. What is interesting is that, if the decision is upheld, then it would challenge the fabric of indigene status as we know it nationally But I would have to see the full record of the decision to understand the context of the suit and the decision

My position on Northern Secession pre independence was firstly, that we need to access where the threats were coming from They primarily came from the religious class The Emir of Katsina and the Emir of Zaria (and the other clerics in the Northern House of Chiefs) On Ahmadu Bellos position, he discouraged it on economic grounds as shown here. So the argument is really that, would the religious clerics have been able to pull off secession without consolidation of Ahmadu Bello? How about British interests? When there was even a compromise with Ahmadu Bello, the British Secretary of State intervened So it’s debatable on what would happen if say Ahmadu Bello was in support of it The argument is driven home by exchanges by Awolowo and the Secretary of State My Second Argument is that most of the time, Secession was used by the North as a bargaining tool I.e in 1951 and not as a centrally agreed idea What power did religious leaders have as opposed to Ahmadu Bello

@mendullah007 @StatiSense @__Oppenheimer If you have read the Autobiography of Obafemi Awolowo, as well as the denfintion by the Northern Regional Government in 1958, you would see Southern Zaria there, it’s Southern Kaduna And you would see terms like minorities who are not Hausa, Fulani or Kanuri

The North and the Middle Belt groups have nothing in common Prior to British Conquest, both lived separately, fought series of wars and jihads which the North waged on the Middle Belt peoples The groups in the Central part of the country cannot co-exist with the Arewa North

It seems you do not understand the problem and the solution The problem has not even been resolved in our constitution. On the one hand it says no state religion and on the other it has Sharia provisions in it. On the one hand it has provisions on indigeneship and federal character and on the other, it speaks about granting rights to anyone born in any particular place So which is it. The problems of Nigeria is that we are different people and view society differently.
