Did You Know? Authentication vs. Authorization In web application security, authentication and authorization are two different but closely related concepts. Authentication verifies a user’s identity it answers the question, “Who are you?” This may involve a username and password, multi-factor authentication, biometrics, or a security token. Authorization determines what an authenticated user is permitted to access or perform. It answers the question, “What are you allowed to do?” For example, a regular user may view their own profile, while an administrator may manage users and system settings. A secure web application must implement both properly. Weak authentication can allow attackers to take over accounts, while broken authorization can allow users to access information or functions that should be restricted.
