@quitmateaus This is a true cash grab by the au government, nothing else. Let people have their vices
@official_verge_ @quitmateaus Hand in your Medicare card mate.
@official_verge_ @quitmateaus Alcholol and fast food a bigger problem.
@official_verge_ @quitmateaus What people dont understand is that allowing gov overreach with smokers means that gov overreach will eventually reach them.
@official_verge_ @quitmateaus As long as they then pay for the medical care their vices create.
@official_verge_ @quitmateaus Very true, otherwise start taxing fast food since the common argument seems to be they take up the health system. Cardio vascular disease is still number one killer after all these years.
@official_verge_ @quitmateaus Make cigarettes the equivalent of $5 USD for each one (including the equivalent in roll-your-own loose leaf tobacco per cigarette's worth).
@official_verge_ @quitmateaus You still can. You just have to pay for it.
@official_verge_ @quitmateaus Whilst it could also be so it’s also a move by the govornment to incentivise quitting smoking. I feel for you if you’re still addicted because I have friends who have been and some who still are but it’s not necessarily a vice as they usually give something in return like a high.
@official_verge_ @quitmateaus I agree to an extent, though there should be taxes on vices that create a direct revenue stream to paying for treatment of health problems they can cause, I can't imagine the exorbitant taxes on cigarettes don't bring in far more than is spent on smoking related illnesses.
@official_verge_ @quitmateaus At this point, my guess is that gov renenue is no longer increasing with additional tax hikes. Now it is also a cash cow for the black market.
