The tricky Daval-pa is a Persian and Kurdish monster that appears as an old man, but with leather-like appendages for legs. The creature wraps them around their victim's back forcing them to carry the daval-pa and perform hard labor.
The djinn/jinn are the most famous beings of the Middle East and Islam, but Middle Eastern folklore is full of fantastic creatures. Some of them are terrifying and others benevolent. A thread on mythic and legendary beasts and monsters
In Middle Eastern and Islamic folklore God creates three races: angels, humans, and djinn/jinn. While the djinn have become associated with evil spirits, there are beneficent ones as well. Legends tell of many such helpful beings. A thread on the good djinn/jinn:
Thread #2 From #Balkh to Baghdad. When Balkh native town of Barmakids fell to Arabs in 663,Khalid ibn Barmak and his brothers moved to Basra in Iraq, where they converted to Islam,Barmakids were early supporter of the Abbasid revolt against the Umayyads,1/IY
Planning a new thread on the djinn/jinn this wed. Going to dive into some obscure ones, I think it’ll be fun
Hish apa kalian ni, mana ada cerita tentang Dajjal dalam al-Quran.
If 'god' is so powerful then why does he needs human to do all the stuffs for him? Why does he needs to constantly remind and threaten humans to follow his biddings? This is because of the firmament, a conceptual border that separates him from the humans on earth.
Heaven (Samaa' / Langit) is not paradise (Jannah). It has been used interchangeably as 'Syurga' in translations but in the Quran those terms were used separately. Heaven is more related to the abode of the 'supreme beings' like 'God' and their 'Angels'
Angels are often depicted with wings because symbolically they dwell in the sky/heaven/langit. They're supposed to go back and forth between heaven and earth, where humans live. So kena terbang selalu. Metaphorically.

@aaolomi Finally, this scene, in which the angels bow to Adam and the jinn Iblis refuses, comes from f. 16a of a Majma' al-Tawarikh (Assembly of Histories) written by Hafiz-i Abru in 1415 (TSK B282): x.com/aaolomi/status…. It shows Iblis with dark skin and horns, typical for the period

The Rukh, or Roc is an enormous eagle that could carry an elephant in its talons. Appearing in the story of Sinbad the sailor and other tales, it was reputed to live on the island of Madagascar. It was so vast that Ibn Battuta thought it a floating mountain over the China Sea.

Why does this distinction exists? Because the theological framework was traditionally built on the samaa' wal 'ard concept (langit dan bumi), of a firmament separating the kingdom of gods and kingdom for human. x.com/black_l4b3l/st…
If 'god' is so powerful then why does he needs human to do all the stuffs for him? Why does he needs to constantly remind and threaten humans to follow his biddings? This is because of the firmament, a conceptual border that separates him from the humans on earth.

Paradise or jannah, meanwhile, is described with more earthly illustrations: rivers, plants, orchards.
Heaven (Samaa' / Langit) is not paradise (Jannah). It has been used interchangeably as 'Syurga' in translations but in the Quran those terms were used separately. Heaven is more related to the abode of the 'supreme beings' like 'God' and their 'Angels'
These metaphors got exaggerated literally (purposely at first) to conceal the fact that they're regular human beings, going about their business among the population at that time. Perfectly concealed.
Angels are often depicted with wings because symbolically they dwell in the sky/heaven/langit. They're supposed to go back and forth between heaven and earth, where humans live. So kena terbang selalu. Metaphorically.
Ok-- images of angels in Islam! I'm going to try to quote tweet and attach images to follow @aaolomi's thread, let's see how it goes! 1/?
@MENALibAHS @aaolomi The Prophet on Burāq guided by Jibrā'īl & escorted by angels ascending the heavens Add MS 6613; Rabī' II 1076; Makhzan al-Asrār by Niẓāmīمخزن الاسرار; f.3v
@MENALibAHS @aaolomi the artist in a manner similar to the artist, while "bad" people are represented as similar to the people whom the artist's identity group despises. Hence, the messengers & angels are Central Asian/Iranian & Iblis is dark-skinned. Kind of like blonde-haired, blue-eyed Jesus here.
