Proposed changes to the MUTCD were developed at the June 2020 meeting and sent to sponsor organizations in August for comment. The 14 proposals (in PDF format) and the compiled list of 1300+ comments (in Excel format) are posted on the NCUTCD website at ncutcd.org/technical-comm…

At its Thursday session, the BTC looked at coordination with other TCs on issues, more assessment of advisory bike lane devices, review assignments for the upcoming MUTCD rulemaking, and updating the (rather long) committee task list .

Reminder: @USDOTFHWA is expected to publish a draft for a new edition of the #MUTCD later this year for public review & comment. But that draft was “locked down” months ago, so this week’s work is for inclusion in the ‘next next’ MUTCD.

The BTC is currently reviewing task force work on advisory bike lanes and will work with other technical committees to draft proposed #MUTCD content for review at a future meeting.

The June meeting so far: the BTC reviewed the Part 9 figures regarding labeling of signs as optional, but decided no changes are needed.

The National Committee (@ncutcd ) has also approved proposals on revised guidance on bike lane buffers and allowing optional use of revised "Wait Here For Green" bicycle detector markings. These will go to FHWA for possible inclusion in a new edition of the #MUTCD .

At this morning's National Committee (@ncutcd ) meeting, the NC has approved proposed "Turning Vehicles Yield to Bikes" and "Must Give Bicycles _ Ft Clearance" signs. These will now go to @USDOTFHWA for possible inclusion in a new #MUTCD.

Looks like the BTC will have a full handlebar basket of ongoing work in preparation for the next meeting in Arlington, VA Jan 9-11, 2019. Several task forces will work on issues and proposals in the intervening months.

Discussion continues on the appropriate use of Turning Vehicles Yield to Bicycles regulatory signs. Working with multiple committees for optimum guidelines.

One of the biggest hurdles the BTC faces is acquiring data from experiments and tests. Even though there are currently many FHWA-approved experiments underway for bike treatments, there often isn’t enough data to propel a proposal thru the evaluation & review process.
