The key to understanding Socialism is to first define what type of Socialism you studying: Ethnic socialism like the 1930's or present day China, religious socialism like that of Iran, Saudi Arabia, or Israel, or the democratic socialism of Japan, the USA, and Europe.

I thought Mike would lead this time, and he did sort of, strolling next to Oksana at the front of our line. I was next to last. We never marched fast, but we didn’t amble along, ours was a steady pace. The sun was hot on that early June day, but the flowers had not yet wilted.

We left the next morning carrying full packs. The hike to the intersection would take all day, so we expected to sleep there and then continue on the following day. We didn’t have a set order of walking, but Oksana or Sasha always took the lead, and the other brought up the rear.

We could go on excursions up the road to Davis Brown Farm or to the old logging camp where Hector had been when the Fog came, but we had never been allowed to continue on Petersburg Road past the intersection. This was welcomed news. But why was he coming?

“Mike asked the Mayor to let us do a patrol past Logging Camp Road,” Oksana said. “The Mayor said we could if Mike goes with us.” Our cheers were muted. We had long complained about the Logging Camp Road limit.

When they reached Annie and Mike there was a whole lot of hugging and exclaiming. Hector noticed us and yelled that we should come greet the Chief. We were not particularly enthused at the prospect. “We gotta go,” I said. “Yeah. I hope he isn’t mean,” James said.

That’s when I recognized him, a medium height, sandy haired man, one of the ancients, but not as old as Jean or Lily. No one suggested stopping our play and greeting him. We barely knew him and what we knew of him was scary.
