When working on early drafts of lyrics, an artist can become another type of artist.
Morphine's rider always included "Exotic Mood Modifiers" before weed was legal. Sometimes the promoters would get it and sometimes the band would find themselves in a dressing room filled with lava lamps, tie-dye and incense. morphineband.com/collections/on…
The song Kerouac featured on “B-Sides & Otherwise” was an homage to one of Mark’s literary inspirations, novelist and poet Jack Kerouac.

“I always knew you would succeed, no matter what you tried. And I know you did it all in spite of me.” In 98, Mark performed a stripped down version of "In Spite of Me" at the Kendall Cafe with Pale Brothers, one of his side projects with the incomparable Jimmy Ryan on mandolin.
A behind the scenes look at the "Yes" fireplace in action, which was based off a real fireplace. Mark loved to use elements from his life in his art and on the album covers.

@morphine_band When the string ensemble joined for that album, it was the Morphine sound at its Apex, in my opinion. New levels of emotion arose from it.

@morphine_band I lived in Central Square '87-'95. I saw some of Mark's first experiments with one-string bass etc., at The Plough & Stars and other Central Sq clubs. then watched Morphine grow. Lived a few blocks from him. A solid guy. I still miss him.

This remains one of the greatest concerts I've ever seen, taking place in a church-turned-club in Pontiac, MI. I was devastated to have missed Mark, one of my musical inspirations, who passed away 2 weeks before we were finally going to get to see Morphine live.
When The Night came out, Orchestra Morphine was formed to support the album. The band featured Dana, Billy and Jerome, Hypnosonics members Russ Gershon, Mike Rivard and Tom Halter, along with Evan Harriman, Laurie Sargent, & Christian McNeil. (Riley the dog declined to perform.)
