@moordereht There are two important aspects of mechanics I'm looking for these days most of the time (and luckily for me they are a lot more common now than they used to be):

@moordereht Firstly, non-binary mechanical outcomes. Not just succeed/fail but full success/partial success/failure, possibly with a complicating rare crit effect. Mainly because binary outcomes are boring and don't really work so that you can build on them, but also because they been done.
@moordereht Secondly, a mechanical architecture for players to mitigate purely mechanical outcomes with legitimate trade-offs, not just a token economy.
@moordereht If there are two elements with which to simply start, it would be those.
@moordereht Stress mechanics go right to the heart of that because they do manifest real costs in exchange for the player to be able to say "no, I'd prefer this other thing happens." There is a built-in level of escalation, which works particularly well in horror.
