I keep meeting so many animation students who say they love and adore "story" and want to pursue it professionally but don't like to read or write much. What's up with that?!?
Not that it's limited to young artists. I've meet so many seasoned board artists in series and feature that would be brilliant writers but they just refuse to write. Wouldn't you want to draw what you wrote?!?
@mexopolis Something my wife has discovered teaching both drama and english is that there is a non-integration between the visual arts and the written arts. Reading and writing is treated like a functionary discipline (technically there are aspects to this, yes) and "the arts" are alchemy
@mexopolis Most can’t do research into character development building into animation let alone a script.
@mexopolis I think it just takes a while, from someone who had to learn the value of how important that is over time
@mexopolis I don't mind writing but I always have this nasty habit that I start something and draft up some really cool ideas and some basic scenes and then just kinda lose interest and wander off... Not sure how to fix that
@mexopolis I had animation students who didn't like watching animation nor doing animation. One wanting to transfer to CALARTS and all she did in class was whatsapear and doing her nails...
@mexopolis Just a theory, but I reckon it's because they're bombarded with so much passive media from other sources these days that they just haven't had to discover the joy of reading.
@mexopolis Animation is a uniquely visual storytelling medium, perhaps those drawn to it struggle with more literary storytelling and find it an attractive outlet? I’d guess gamers are similarly predisposed?
