We kick off 2024 with our longest episode to date -- from legends of the Golem of Prague, we proceed to an extended consideration of generative AI and how it might affect medieval studies (or, at least, this show). #golem #medievalAI bit.ly/MDTEp105
Editing is almost done on our next episode, so here is its mystery word for you consideration: dyrne.
Happy Valentine's Day from Medieval Death Trip! And as a a preview of the topic of our upcoming episode, here are some attempts by DALL-E to generate images of a golem made from Valentine's conversation hearts in medieval Prague. #medievalvalentine
If you're looking to get in a medievalish Christmas mood, check out the "MDT Christmas" playlist on Spotify: open.spotify.com/playlist/5EmlX… Note: Playlist hand-sequenced. Shuffle it at your own risk (of hearing "Coventry Carol" five times in a row).
Today begins this year's Medieval Death Trip Advent Calendar over on our Instagram account ([at]medievaldeathtrip). New images behind the doors each day for the next 24 days!
Episode 104 is out, which brings our survey of the legends and life of alleged magician pope, Gerbert d'Aurillac. We hear Walter Map's version of the Dark Legend and then learn more about the real Gerbert's contributions to science. bit.ly/MDTEp104
Happy (U.S.) Thanksgiving from Medieval Death Trip. Here's a pick from our archives that touches on some possible medieval origins of modern Thanksgiving traditions. MDT Ep. 33: "Concerning Some Bad Houseguests" (bit.ly/MDTEp33) [Image generated by DALL-E]
Something has broken through the veil, an interloper into our Gerbert d'Aurillac series -- a Victorian voice in the form of R. Garnett's short story "The Demon Pope." Thus rises from the mists the featured text for today's Halloween anniversary episode! bit.ly/MDTEp103
I've put together a pair of Halloween playlists -- not specifically medieval, but I think they line up with the spirit of the show. The 1st, "MDT Spooky" is primarily instrumental (open.spotify.com/playlist/1yYP5…), and the 2nd, "MDT Spooky Songbook" is songs (open.spotify.com/playlist/1yYP5…).
Just in time to kick off Spooky Season, it's Episode 102: "Concerning the Occult Career of Pope Sylvester II," as told by William of Malmesbury, along with a look at the historical career of Sylvester II, a.k.a. Gerbert d'Aurillac. bit.ly/MDTEp102
The mystery word for our upcoming episode on Gerbert d'Aurillac, alleged magician pope, is... cleowen. [Image by DALL-E.]
For our Patreon patrons, an appendix to Ep. 101, in which we get a bit of economic travel-writing from Tudor antiquarian (and one-time owner of the Melrose Chronicle manuscript) John Leland. patreon.com/posts/mdt-ep-1…
It's time to go back to the Melrose Chronicle to learn just how dangerous it can be to go to the bathroom (apocryphally). It's Episode 101: "Concerning Danish Devastations, a Devilish Pope, a Deceitful Duke, and English Decline." bit.ly/MDTEp101
New episode is in the editing bay, so here's its mystery word to contemplate: banaráð.
So glad to see MDT back and 100 episodes strong! Interestingly—considering this episode's subject—its release missed by only one day the 1,155th anniversary of the printing of the oldest surviving printed book to bear a date: a woodblocked Diamond Sutra dated to 11 May AD 868!

Appendix to Ep. 100 is out for our Patreon supporters. In it, I reflect on some frustrations with the transition from physical to digital media, touching on topics from streaming services to the historical arc of cinematic homemedia to interlibrary loan. patreon.com/mdtpodcast
For our 100th episode, we look at one of the technologies that marks an endpoint for the middle ages, the printing press, and consider how Johann Gutenberg may be a prototype for today's paranoid tech tycoons and the lawsuits that so often dog them. bit.ly/MDTEp100
A lovely morning to kick off the International Congress on Medieval Studies at Western Michigan University! (Also, I really am putting the polish on Ep. 100 between sessions, and it should be out within 24 hrs.)
Finally, after a month of laryngitis, a new episode is on its way! Here's it's riddle to consider: "What space is from the highest space of the sea to the deepest?" (or: "How deep is the ocean?")
On this date 796 years ago, two brothers fought each other for the throne of the Isle of Man and the Kingdom of the Isles. We return to the Chronicle of Man and the Sudreys for Episode 99: "A Valentine's Battle for the Kingship of Man"! bit.ly/MDTEp99

@mdtpodcast Could use more of McKennitt's To Drive the Cold Winter Away, I want to say, but then I'd have said that if you'd included every song...
@mdtpodcast I just want to say that I absolutly love Medieval Death Trip. It has become my favorite podcast since I found it this past summer. I have learned so much and I look forward to learning more. Thank you for all you do to put out such a quality show! ---The Half-Blind Traveller
Always amazing when the subjects of two of my favorite podcasts incidentally cross paths! @pontifactspod, if you've not yet recorded this far in advance—and oh how earnestly I pray you've not!—this glorious image of Sylvester II simply /must/ be considered in faciem sanctus! 😅
New episode of Medieval Death Trip! Light the beacons!!

@mdtpodcast Between posting my comment and reading yours I realized Patreon also has it available (duh!), so I was able to listen there! Now Overcast is telling me it's unauthorized, though clearly Patreon is still current since I could access it there. Strange. If it happens on the next 1/
@mdtpodcast member episode, maybe I'll try re-adding the RSS feed to Overcast, kind of a hard reset. For now, though, all is well — save for these ill-colored individuals lurking about ...
@mdtpodcast , just wanted to say I've just come across MDT and can say I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I'm interested in the mediaeval, in particular the philosophical/theological side and find your podcast to be a fascinating insight into how we can understand this amazing time
Love the name, love the podcast.....it's always a treat when a new episode lands 😀

@mdtpodcast One of my professors recommended you, and I've recommended you to a few of my friends in the field as well as others just into the period. I might use some portions of ep. 100 when I teach sociolinguistics and technology. You do a nice job relating to various other tech panics.
@mdtpodcast Just finished ep. 100 -- I've listened to all the main feed episodes. Definitely one of my favorite podcasts. I'm getting my doctorate in Medieval Studies and I love the show, but also pass on episodes to other people (like the revenant tales and medieval true crime).
@mdtpodcast Van der Linde's rant was a nice touch. He goes over the top, but his Noodle reminded me of people on this ap and elsewhere who say things like, "If the Romans were so smart, why didn't they have IPhones?!"
@mdtpodcast Since you asked, I have listened to all your episodes, main and Patreon. They day I discovered it, i just started at Ep1, and since then, keep looking forward to the next one. And btw good episodes are just worth waiting for...
@mdtpodcast I’ve listened to them all. One of my favorite podcasts. Looking forward to the next 100!
