if the current senior figures of the democrat party had a binary choice between the US getting a universal healthcare system or trump winning the next election in a huge blowout, they'd enthusiastically pick the latter
@shaun_vids A big chunk of the Build Back Better bill, which was eventually whittled down to the Inflation Reduction Act (to satisfy Joe Manchin), was going to be a massive chunk of new spending for care work This is not an administration hostile to federal investment in health care
@decmusicology @shaun_vids When is the vote on Medicare for All?
@maxwellterry @shaun_vids I dunno, when is a Democratic majority in the House going to return to office? There's your answer. Doesn't make a lick of sense to put the legislation forward before then, except as empty symbolism
@decmusicology @shaun_vids Why didn't they do it when they had a majority? Who killed the public option in the ACA?
@maxwellterry @decmusicology @shaun_vids You are asking questions that have easy answers to look up. But it's clear that you don't understand that Obama spent all of his political currency to pass the ACA, because Dems were not the lock-in-step voting bloc in 2010 that they are today.
@d_chaloux @decmusicology @shaun_vids So what's the answer? Why didn't they include the public option? Which organization, specifically, killed it? Why would passing the 1993 GOP plan affect his political capital? Maybe he was just, you know, ineffective?
@maxwellterry @d_chaloux @shaun_vids The ACA was passed with a filibuster-proof majority That meant getting a whole bunch of conservative Democrats on side who would disagree with you Biden has managed to actually pass stuff with a razor-thin majority in the Senate by using the reconciliation mechanism
@decmusicology @d_chaloux @shaun_vids You're looking at the worst performing Congress ever. #UncapTheHouse
