In school, we’re taught to value peace — “world peace” is the goal. As an adult, I learned that “peace” is quietly violent. Peace often demands silence. Peace often means “wait” or “on our terms.” As an adult, I am shifting my orientation toward “peace” in favor of freedom.

One of the most robust childhood findings of all time is that vocabulary acquisition by Pre-K is directly tied to reading comprehension in high school. Hispanic parents read half as much, and Black parents 2/3rds as much, to their kids as white parents. Culture, not race.
