Balancing speed and quality as you scale is hard. Early on, we shipped fast. No process, just prototypes. As we grew, stability started to slow us down. Here’s how I’ve learned to stay fast without breaking everything: Prototype > PRD - build, test, iterate. Share early - rough work builds momentum. Micro-startups - small, proud, scrappy teams move faster. Recruit believers - energy beats process. Blur the lines - everyone owns the product. Stay close to users - real feedback drives urgency. The best teams move fast and build well. It’s not about choosing speed or quality, it’s about earning both.

Most PMs stop at question 1. Good PMs reach question 2. Great PMs consistently think through all 5. Your job isn't to make everyone happy today. It's to build something that matters tomorrow.
Before any major product decision, I ask: What's the 1st order effect? What's the 2nd order effect? What's the 3rd order effect? (What precedent does this set? What behaviors will this incentivize?)
Most PMs know second-order thinking (asking "what happens next?") But there's a more powerful mental model: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Order Decision Making. The difference? You follow the chain reaction all the way through. Here's why it matters for product decisions 🧵
Life punishes the vague wish and rewards the specific ask. After all, conscious thinking is largely asking and answering questions in your own head. If you want confusion and heartache, ask vague questions. If you want uncommon clarity and results, ask uncommonly clear questions.

I consistently watch users blow through confirmation dialogs without reading a single one, or regard for the consequences. Oftentimes, coming back to ask for help in fixing the issue This is the Peltzman Effect in action. The more safety features you add, the more reckless users become. They trust the guardrails, so they stop paying attention. I've been guilty of this in design: - Added "Are you sure?" → Users trained to click Yes - Built undo features → Clients stopped being careful The fix isn't more warnings. It's better friction: - Make risky actions actually hard to do - Hide dangerous features until users prove they need them - Default to safe, require explicit override for risky Your confirmation dialog isn't protecting anyone. It's just teaching users to ignore warnings.
