@Jinx9104 It’s insane how much of an affect redlining has made on our society. It’s super depressing that ppl still being generationally affected by the usage of horrible practices.
One thing that was stood out to me in this class was the extent to how bad the criminal justice system is. I didn’t know that the US had the highest incarceration rate, let alone how many POC are in that rate disproportionately. #SOCL214
@lazaroyaire I also didn’t realize the cost, people always talk about how to get rid of “illegals” and never stop to consider how difficult becoming a citizen is.
Before watching the video i knew that the immigration system was bad, but i didn’t realize how hard it was to get a green card. It’s crazy that there’s people that still want to make the imitation system even harder than it already is. #SOCL214
@BellaBrent2025 I agree! Its totally insane, its also a massive shame on our country to have so many people incarcerated. Especially considering many of the people incarcerated are completely non violent.
This video has really surprising statistics, and gets the point across of how much of a problem mass incarceration is. I feel like everyone vaguely knows there’s a somewhat of a disparity in the justice system, but not many people know the extent of it. #SOCL214
The video demonstrated the concept of redlining and how detrimental it was. This practice was (at least legally) ended a long time ago, but the effects are still taking place and have prevented people or color to create generational wealth, creating income inequality. #SOCL214
@aureliaemu25 Optics are such a strange concept, you can’t measure them genuinely but they make such an impact. I think most of the public would be more in favor of affirmative action or other similar pushes for equality moreso if it was perceived differently.
Affirmative action is important because in a society that has such a history of undermining communities of color, something has to be done to ensure genuine equality. Affirmative action produces a net good without promoting any actual downsides. #SOCL214
The model minority myth is so harmful to not only the asian community but as well as all communities of color. This stereotype of asians being naturally intelligent/better than other poc is dangerous. It puts people in a box while justifying oppression of other groups. #SOCL214
@Nickemich15 a lot of people become defensive when they’re told they have privilege. they don’t like being told that others have different struggles from theirs for some reason
Privilege is important to talk about but it’s also very difficult to confront. Knowing that a group you are in is treated better than another is upsetting. (of course being in the other group is harder but still) Feeling guilty is normal, but it’s important to talk about #SOCL214
@schumacherzoe21 It is depressing that people have faced conflicts over this. It’s horrible that people have been made to feel less than because of their hair texture.
In this video I learned that many people have a deep and conflicted relationship with their hair. I figured that this pressure would be faced from general society, but I didn’t know this struggle came from family members as well. I’m glad these ppl now love their hair. #SOCL214
The media and pop culture as a whole has always had a big impact on society. This is why showing representation for minorities is so important. While diversity in media is becoming more common, having a diverse cast shouldn’t be shocking, it should just be the standard. #SOCL214
@aureliaemu25 It’s depressing that these issues are overlooked because they affect fewer people. Most problems are not as simple and straightforward as many would like them to be.
Intersectionality is a somewhat easy to understand but it’s hard to address. Groups with multiple identities have a unique experience with oppression, and therefore need a unique solution. It’s already hard enough to make progress with non intersecting issues!! #SOCL214
