I think it’s a supply problem but not quite as you describe. It’s not that we simply can’t create more supply. It’s that electricity stopped getting cheaper, which means we stopped unlocking new sources of industrial demand that could stack margin on top of the cost. This is evidenced by AI data centers. Luckily they produce incredibly high revenue per unit of energy consumption, which is unlike everything else in industry. Suddenly, boom the electricity sector is dynamic again and can respond to demand. We need a new technological paradigm to exploit to further reduce electricity costs. Do so and the demand will show up. IMO the biggest lever will be on-site solar and batteries and gas, as that reduces grid costs. But also to a lesser extent large scale solar, batteries, nuclear, geothermal, and wind can bring costs down somewhat. Very few in electricity world has a vision for meaningful cost reductions. We’ve lost our ambition.

Lots of discussion in energy markets uses terms like behind the meter, off grid, islanded, co-located or other jargon like they are interchangeable when in reality there are distinct definitions. This leads to a ton of confusion about what is and isn’t happening in the sector.

The future of intelligence (AI data centers, land and space based) is all capex and basically no opex. The future of manufacturing (automation, robots, dark factories) is all capex and basically no opex. Engineering and capital will be all that matters.

We should treat electricity as a growth platform (like highways, broadband) rather than a commodity to be tightly balanced at least cost. The federal agenda would then shift from “optimize around forecast demand” to “build abundant capacity and let growth come to it.”

Because I'm an OG solar optimist, people assume I'm a solar maximalist. And solar is, clearly, the fastest dropping energy tech of all time, and (modulo some wild cards) likely to be the cheapest source of electrons on planet earth. But winter is a real thing. Multi-week cloudy periods are real. Batteries struggle with them. Electricity demand will be higher in winter than summer as we electrify heat. Wind + clean firm (if any get their act together) are going to be a vital part of the energy mix.
