There is something profoundly rotten in a country that puts its own soldiers in the dock while the men who tried to tear the state apart walk free, laundered into history as "participants" in a conflict. That is where Britain now stands under Keir Starmer. Not reconciled. Not healed. But morally inverted. This is not justice delayed. It is justice weaponised. A state turning its power inward, not to defend itself, but to prosecute its own authority after the fact. Soldiers sent into Northern Ireland to restore order in the face of an armed insurgency are now told that the rules have changed, the context no longer matters, and they alone will answer for a war the government itself authorised and sustained. The deception lies in the language. Labour speaks of "balance", "truth recovery", and "healing". But balance that applies law to only one side is not balance at all. Truth that ignores the political reality of a sustained terrorist campaign is not truth. And healing that rips open cases from half a century ago, when evidence is gone and memory is weaponised, is cruelty dressed up as conscience. The most damning fact in this entire affair is also the simplest. Only soldiers kept records. Terrorists destroyed evidence, decommissioned weapons without forensic testing, and were rewarded with early release, comfort letters, and political rehabilitation. The state agreed to that bargain. It signed it. It enforced it. And now it pretends surprise that only veterans remain available for prosecution. That is why this policy targets the elderly, not the guilty. It does not pursue those who planted bombs or murdered civilians in pubs. It pursues men who followed lawful orders, wore uniforms, filed reports, and trusted that the state they served would not one day disown them to appease activists and lawyers. This is not accountability. It is selective punishment. Bloody Sunday is held up as the moral key to unlock everything. It is the exception turned into a rule. An emotionally charged tragedy is used to justify open-ended re-litigation of an entire counter-insurgency campaign. Once that door is opened, no soldier in any conflict is ever safe again. Not from the law as it stood, but from the law as rewritten decades later by people who never bore the burden of command. What Starmer's government refuses to admit is that this is not about the past alone. It is about the future of lawful force. A country that tells its soldiers, "Fight for us now, but understand that one day we may abandon you," cannot expect clarity, confidence, or loyalty in return. Morale collapses. Recruitment withers. Trust between the armed forces and the state corrodes. The retired SAS commanders who have spoken out understand this perfectly. They know that humiliation of elite troops is not a sideshow but a strategic gift to Britain's enemies. You do not need to defeat Western armies if Western governments will paralyse them through endless inquiry, retrospective prosecution, and fear. Lawfare replaces warfare. And Labour is playing along. This is why Kemi Badenoch is right to call this a national disgrace. Not because mistakes were never made, but because the state is pretending it bears no responsibility for the war it fought, only for the men it sent to fight it. That is a coward's position. And a dangerous one. Starmer insists his hands are tied. They are not. They are tied by choice. By submission to legal frameworks that treat state force as inherently suspect and non-state violence as morally contextual. By a refusal to say plainly that the British Army was deployed to defeat terrorism, not to commit it. By a moral cringe that mistakes self-denunciation for virtue. A democracy that will not defend its defenders cannot endure. A state that prosecutes its own authority after the fact is not reckoning with history but surrendering to it. And a government that treats veterans worse than terrorists has ceased to govern.

And that’s the most damning part. Because what we’ve ended up with isn’t policing by principle, it’s policing by optics. Who’s loudest. Who’s most easily offended. Who’ll cause the biggest headache for senior officers and politicians if they’re treated like everyone else. Say something unfashionable online — not violent, not threatening, just wrongthink — and suddenly the police rediscover urgency. Officers at the door, caution read, devices seized, careers torched. Not for actions, not for harm, but for vibes. Meanwhile, genuinely hostile, aggressive, intimidating behaviour from approved causes gets waved through like a backstage pass at Glastonbury. Same streets. Same laws. Different rulebook. And don’t you dare call that balance. We’re told it’s all about “context” — the magic word used to excuse every inconsistency. Funny how context only ever seems to work one way. When certain groups scream abuse, block roads, intimidate journalists, or glorify violence, context says understand. When others crack a tasteless joke or express anger badly, context vanishes and the full prosecutorial sledgehammer comes down. That isn’t justice. That’s institutional cowardice. Policing has drifted from enforcing the law to managing outrage. From protecting the public to protecting reputations. From impartiality to risk-aversion dressed up as virtue. Officers are no longer asking “Is this illegal?” — they’re asking “Who will shout the loudest if we act?” And here’s the quiet truth they don’t want said out loud: this doesn’t protect minorities, it doesn’t strengthen democracy, and it doesn’t make society safer. It poisons trust. It teaches people that the law is elastic, speech is dangerous, and fairness depends on your politics. That’s how you radicalise the middle — not the extremes. Normal people don’t want chaos. They don’t want hate. They don’t want to excuse arseholes. They want one standard. Break the law, face consequences. Don’t break it, be left alone. That’s it. Not “depends who you are,” not “depends who complained,” not “depends what week it is on Twitter.” Instead, we’ve got police acting as part-time social workers, part-time PR managers, and full-time internet hall monitors — while crime that actually ruins lives gets logged, filed, and forgotten. Burglary? Sorry. Car theft? Afraid not. Mean words? Now we’ve got resources. And when people point this out, they’re told they’re imagining it. Or worse — that noticing inequality is somehow immoral. That’s the final insult. Because the quickest way to lose a country’s consent isn’t tyranny — it’s telling people they’re mad for noticing unfairness. This can’t continue. Either the law applies equally, or it doesn’t deserve respect. And once respect goes, no amount of slogans, statements, or stern press conferences will bring it back. The police proceeded to fabricate evidence and ban the away fans from attending, on the basis that they purportedly had a record of violence that threatened local people.
