I arrived at my boyfriend's family home for Sunday lunch carrying a fruitcake I had baked myself and wearing my best dress. We had been dating for two years, and he finally said it was time for me to meet his mother.
On the drive there, he couldn't stop talking about how much she would love me.
The moment we got inside, he called out happily,
"Ma, we're here!"
An elegant woman walked out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on a towel.
The second her eyes met mine...
She stopped walking.
The towel slipped from her hand.
For a few long seconds, neither of us said a word.
She stared at me as if she had seen a ghost.
Then, in a voice that barely came out, she whispered,
"You?"
My boyfriend looked from her to me and frowned.
"Wait... you two know each other?"
My mouth went dry, I couldn't answer.
Three years earlier, before I ever met my boyfriend, I had been searching for an apartment. She said was the landlady of that house.
After collecting my rent and caution fee, she disappeared.
Her phone stopped going through and the house was never handed over to me.
I spent months trying to recover money I had worked so hard to save.
And Now...
This sounds incredibly painful, especially after years of being the parent who carried most of the responsibility. At 17, many teenagers do have some say in where they live, depending on the laws where you are, but this isn't just about legal rights. It's about her safety and your relationship with her.
If she's safe, try not to make this a battle to "win." The quickest way to push a teenager further away is to turn it into a tug-of-war between parents. Keep the door open, let her know she's loved, and make sure she knows she can come home without fear of being judged or punished.
And iff you're genuinely concerned that she's living alone without appropriate supervision or that she's at risk, document what's happening and speak with a family lawyer or your local family services to understand your options.
Focus on her wellbeing rather than the conflict with your ex. Right now, preserving your relationship with your daughter may matter more than winning the argument with her father.
My husband and I separated about 10 years ago I couldn’t really afford a divorce until now, my children are now 21 and 17. I more or less brought them up on my own.
My ex-husband used to take them every second Friday and Saturday that stopped many years ago. My youngest
I stepped outside yesterday morning to prepare breakfast, only to discover that our 12.5kg cooking gas cylinder had disappeared from the spot beside the kitchen wall where we always kept it.
In its place sat an old, rusty 3kg camping cylinder that looked like it had been abandoned years ago.
I stood there for a few seconds, convinced I was looking at the wrong house.
Just the previous evening, I had spent over ₦22,000 refilling that cylinder.
I called my partner outside and pointed at the tiny cylinder.
"Where is our gas cylinder?"
Without even looking up, my partner adjusted the housecoat and replied calmly,
"Oh... I exchanged it. The big one isn't safe anymore. I heard they're advising people in the estate to use smaller cylinders because they're less dangerous."
I just stared.
It was the most ridiculous explanation I had ever heard.
Every house on our street had a 12.5kg cylinder, and some families even used bigger ones.
I didn't argue.
Instead, I walked down to the estate gate and asked the security guard if he had seen anyone carrying our gas cylinder out of the compound the previous night.
The guard scratched his head for a moment before saying,
"Ah, Mummy... I saw Oga around 9:30 last night. He loaded the cylinder into the boot of his car."
My heart skipped.
"Did he say where he was taking it?"
The guard smiled innocently.
"He drove straight to the fried yam seller at the junction. I even helped him bring the cylinder down. He told the woman it was his contribution to support her business."
For a few seconds, I couldn't speak.
The same fried yam seller my partner had always insisted was "just a customer."
The same woman whose stand he somehow found an excuse to stop at almost every evening after work.
Standing there at the gate...
I suddenly realized that maybe it wasn't the cooking gas that had been keeping her business running all this time.
A woman in our neighborhood switched on her generator yesterday evening because there had been no electricity all day.
As usual, neighbors came to charge their phones.
She didn't mind.
After a while, a man she had never seen before walked into the compound carrying a phone and a charger.
She asked, "Who are you?"
He replied, "I live in the next compound. They said people charge their phones here."
She pointed him to the extension board, and he plugged in his phone with everyone else's.
Later that night, everyone collected their phones and went home.
She switched off the generator, locked her door, and went to bed.
Early the next morning, there was a loud knock on her door.
When she opened it, several police officers were standing outside.
One of them asked if anyone had charged a phone in her compound the previous night.
Before she could answer properly, they told her they were tracking a stolen phone, and the last signal had led them to her house.
The officers searched the compound.
After a few minutes, one of them found a phone lying beside the wall near the extension board where everyone had charged their devices the previous night.
The woman was stunned.
She had no idea someone had forgotten a phone there.
The officer picked it up, checked the details, and turned to her.
"You'll have to come with us."
She tried to explain that the phone belonged to a man who said he lived in the next compound.
The police asked for his name.
She didn't know it.
They asked which house he lived in.
She couldn't point to one.
They searched the neighboring compounds.
Nobody knew the man she was describing.
It was as if he had vanished into thin air.
Within minutes, she found herself sitting inside a police vehicle, trying to explain how allowing a stranger to charge his phone had landed her in the middle of a criminal investigation.
Helping people is a good thing, but wisdom is just as important as kindness.
Whether you're at home, in your shop, or at your business place, be careful when someone asks to charge a phone, keep a bag, or leave an item with you.
A simple act of goodwill can sometimes pull an innocent person into a situation that's very difficult to explain. 🩷
Once you learn how to shop directly from China, E.g Temù or shien your wardrobe changes completely. Call me cheap I don't care I ain't rich, I don't do fraud.😭
It's knowing what to search for.
Here's my style after making plenty of mistakes.
1. T-shirts:
Skip 100% polyester unless you're buying gym wear.
Instead, search:
• 100% Cotton
• Combed Cotton
• Heavyweight Cotton
• 240-300 GSM Cotton
• Premium Cotton
• Mercerized Cotton
The heavier the GSM, the thicker and more premium the shirt usually feels.
2. Jeans:
Denim Jeans
Temu is surprisingly good for denim if you know what to search.
Search:
• Denim Jeans
• Cotton Denim
• Raw Denim
• Selvedge Denim (if available)
• 98% Cotton + 2% Elastane
• 99% Cotton
Avoid jeans with high polyester content. The more cotton, the better they'll age and feel.
3. Body-hug clothing:
Search:
• Ribbed Knit
• Modal
• Viscose Blend
• Cotton-Spandex Blend
They hold their shape much better than cheap polyester.
4. Hoodies
Search:
• 400 GSM
• French Terry
• Cotton Fleece
• Heavyweight Hoodie
5. Chains
Search:
• 316L Stainless Steel
• Titanium Steel
• PVD Gold Plated
• Vacuum Plated
These are far more resistant to fading than ordinary fashion jewelry.
6. Earrings
Search:
• 925 Sterling Silver
• 316L Stainless Steel
• Hypoallergenic
• Moissanite (if you're buying stones)
7. Scarves
Search:
• Mulberry Silk
• Silk Blend
• Cashmere Blend
• Wool Blend
• Viscose
Avoid the shiny, thin polyester scarves if you're after a premium look.
8. Loafers
Search:
• Genuine Leather
• Cow Leather
• Full Grain Leather (rare but worth looking for)
• Rubber Outsole
9. Sneakers
Search:
• Rubber Outsole
• EVA Midsole
• Breathable Mesh
• Leather Upper
• Stitched Sole
Pictures lie a lot
The description usually tells the truth.
Here's how I shop:
1. Read the material composition before anything else.
2. Sort by Most Orders or Best Selling, not cheapest.
3. Only buy products with lots of reviews or pictures or even better when a Nigerian has purchased it before they always tell the truth.
4. Read the 1-star reviews first. They'll tell you what the seller won't.
5. Look at customer photos, not the product photos.
6. Check the weight of the product. Better quality clothing is often heavier.
7. Read the size chart. Don't assume your Nigerian size matches.
8. If the title has words like "luxury," "premium," or "designer" but the material is 100% polyester, not everything but still move on.
Your best friend isn't the product picture.
It's the material, the reviews, and the customer photos.
That's how you separate the gems from the junk.
I hope this help.
Things are to expensive for a country this poor.
I think its Yahoo boys that's making some of you clowns
You are a security man
You see me 10 times, you beg and hail me 10 times
You sell shoes 85k I can get on Temu for 50k with free delivery
You open a restaurant and use plastic takeaway to sell one plate of Egusi soup for
But on a serious note, if a grown man tells his wife he is sleeping at another man's house, then that other man should at least be informed that he has been volunteered into the lie. You cannot enroll people into your alibi without their consent.
My husband’s phone started vibrating at12 AM last night. He didn't pick up. He just flipped the phone face down and pretended to be snoring.
Two minutes later, my own phone rang. It was a WhatsApp video call from his friend’s wife.I picked it up, my heart thumping, expecting a
@Cheriemike2 The real victim here is the friend's wife. The fact that she had to start making midnight verification calls means her trust had already packed its bags long before that phone rang.
@Cheriemike2 As for you suspecting your husband, I won't say yes and I won't say no. I will just say that a man who reacts with that much panic to a simple question has accidentally submitted evidence that nobody requested.
@Cheriemike2 The funniest part is that your husband wasn't angry because his friend's wife got suspicious. He was angry because his emergency escape plan failed.
Imagine sitting there at midnight, sweating like a politician during an audit.
@martyrdison This is exactly what happens when you spend all your energy caring for others while neglecting yourself. You deserve to have someone look out for you too. It is okay to cry and let it all out.
@Ozayrr_irl The level of detail in this description is very impressive. It takes a lot of clear thinking to describe a picture so perfectly so that the final result can come out looking real
