IS THE BREEDERS’ CUP IN THE HORSE RACING BUSINESS OR THE ASSET MANAGEMENT BUSINESS? The @BreedersCup mission is not to build a hedge fund. It is not to accumulate private equity investments. It is not to invest in oil and gas partnerships. Its mission states that it exists to promote the growth of Thoroughbred breeding, racing, and sales through proactive leadership, innovation, and service. Yet the investment portfolio has grown to approximately $120 million. So here’s the question: At what Board meeting was it decided that growing the portfolio was more important than growing the sport? Was there a vote? Was there a strategic plan? Do the Board of Directors minutes reflect that discussion? Do the Investment Committee minutes reflect that discussion? How many meetings focused on hedge funds, private equity, venture capital, and oil & gas investments? How many focused on growing ownership, fan development, innovation, technology, aftercare, and the long-term health of the sport? Because if racing is facing declining participation, declining foal crops, aging demographics, and industry contraction, the industry deserves to know why accumulating capital became a greater priority than deploying capital. Mission statements are easy to write. The balance sheet reveals the real priorities. The newly elected Members have an opportunity to ask these questions. Time will tell. REFORM IS COMING! DAY 79 ATTN: ALL HORSE RACING STAKEHOLDERS It’s been 79 days since The Jockey Club chose to attack Mike Repole, showing a lack of respect to one of the greatest owners/breeders in our sport. 79 days of silence. 79 days of zero accountability. 79 days while the industry struggles. Meanwhile… The Jockey Club sits on $40M plus in reserves. Breeders’ Cup Limited sits on $120M plus in investments. Over $160M combined. And despite all of that capital… aftercare is still not treated like a true priority. And what do we get? • No leadership • No transparency • No urgency • No answers Let’s talk about reality: The sport is facing one of the most challenging periods in its history, declining foal crops, shrinking fan base, loss of distribution, and struggling racing jurisdictions (especially in California). Yet the two most powerful organizations in the sport are… Sitting. Watching. Hoarding. While issuing reports, speeches, and carefully worded statements. Here’s the question every owner, trainer, breeder, bettor, and fan should be asking: What is the plan? Not a report. Not a speech. Not another “initiative.” A REAL plan. • Where is the capital deployment strategy? • What is the reserve target and why is it so high? • Why isn’t meaningful funding being directed immediately to aftercare and struggling circuits? • Why has there been no response to repeated, legitimate questions from stakeholders? And most importantly: Who is making these decisions? Were members informed? Were boards aligned? Or is this being controlled by a small group with no accountability? Because right now, it doesn’t look like leadership. It looks like detachment. It looks like Park Avenue boardrooms completely disconnected from what’s actually happening on the ground. The industry doesn’t need silence. It doesn’t need optics. It doesn’t need another delayed response. It needs action. DAY 79. Still waiting. REFORM IS COMING! REPOST AND SPEAK OUT.
