What's the takeaway? Well, this time we got lucky, funds are safu. But a different price is paid: lack of credible neutrality. Let's not stop here; we should strive for Stage 2!
But fear no more, we also have stages! Stages are a bit more comprehensive; they are a summary of the risks as a whole. One of the requirements to be a Stage 1 rollup is that users' withdrawals cannot be censored by the operators.
And this case study clearly shows that the answer is no. The Blast upgrade was clearly unwanted from the perspective of the exploiter. The thing about the risk rosette is that the parameters are assessed independently, i.e., as if other risks were green.
It also provides censorship resistance properties, right? The problem lies in a different part of the rosette: the Exit window. It encapsulates upgradeability and permissionless withdrawal delay concepts, answering the question: "Are users safe in case of an unwanted upgrade?"
The force transaction mechanism is considered in the Sequencer Failure category on the risk rosette. Blast (like all opStack rollups) deserves a green category here. In case the Sequencer is down, users can still withdraw by posting a transaction on L1.
Everyone is happy, right? Well, let's discuss rollup censorship resistance. Even though opStack has depositTransaction feature, it did not stop Blast operators from instantly upgrading contracts to work around this. Let's look at Blast's page on @l2beat now.
So Blast is blocking the exploiter from forcing the withdraw via L1. They're censoring now. It's probably also happening on the Sequencer: it can simply refuse to include transactions from the exploiter, effectively freezing this EOA. This leads to the funds being returned.
