The only way we “Secure DC” is with an economic focused plan to empower and stabilize black DC Natives
I find it strange (ok not really, but still) how readily a narrative of more police = less crime + “police were defunded” (when they weren’t) takes hold and yet when teachers say more teachers (ie smaller class sizes) = better outcomes and we DO get defunded REGULARLY we hear 🦗

The District made a commitment to early childhood educators, and we cannot ask them to go back to earning minimum wage. We must restore the Pay Equity Fund in the fiscal year 2025 budget. Here are the reasons why: thedcline.org/2024/04/18/jan…
Important reminder that all the tax breaks in the world will not make investors invest in a money-losing project. @MayorBowser's plan to raise taxes on low income families to fund tax breaks and giveaways to wealthy DC investors is one that has consistently failed nationwide

Agreed, Mr. President. Early childhood educators, home health aides, skilled nursing facility staff, & long-term care facility staff deserve fair compensation!

District voters clearly support raising taxes on wealth, high income, and businesses to increase our collective resources and ensure all pay their fair share 🧵

@MayorBowser cut emergency rental assistance in half claiming residents abuse the program. There’s no evidence of this which lead to our heated exchange. That’s political spin that’s out of touch with hard working people’s reality wusa9.com/article/news/l…
Great Q from LL: [Bowser] presents a world in which the city’s politicians have done all they can possibly do, where imagining any meaningful, structural shift is too radical to consider. In a city where so many are so obviously struggling why accept that? washingtoncitypaper.com/article/687895…

Lots of talk about the Pay Equity Fund’s “unmitigated, unsustainable” growth. This growth is predictable and represents inc participation in the PEF, inc credential attainment among educators, and progress towards pay equity. Cutting the PEF is not the answer
Still trying to figure out how DC is short on SNAP funds but somehow passing a half billion emergency funds for a sports arena and a billionaire. apple.news/AUFp3UmgAS0q0g…
What an argument to make @MayorBowser - if we can't increase wages for everyone, we shouldn't increase wages for anyone. Where was this argument when MPD was offering $25k hiring bonuses? You weren't balancing the budget on their backs
“It feels as though we are proposing to balance this budget on the backs of Black and Brown women in the childcare sector with the elimination of the Pay Equity Fund.”
“There is no other group of women to whom we are saying, ‘There is a career path for you in early childhood, get your associates degree, go get your bachelors degree; but now we are telling you that you have to go back to accepting minimum wage.’”
“We are the envy of the country, it’s not perfect but the suggestion that we go back to square one and say let the market work it out is disappointing, we have to fix this or the market WILL fall apart.”
Thanks to @CMLewisGeorgeW4 for mentioning the ATJ Initiative's impact on domestic violence survivors. A substantial portion of the funds support these DC residents and promote public safety.
How can we give a pay raise to workers one year and take it away the next? What kind of impact does that have on workers, and on quality childcare for our city’s families? This was a hard-won gain in the Homes & Hearts Act I introduced with @CMLewisGeorgeW4 and @CMCharlesAllen.

The Mayor's proposed budget is a death sentence for child care. It cuts pay for 1000s of early educators, pushes 1000s off their health care, rips child care subsidy vouchers from families' hands, & lays the foundation to decimate the sector. Shame. @MayorBowser @Under3DC

By the time he signed he probably had no choice but to stay in DC and yet we’re giving someone with $3 BILLION net worth who could invest this himself $515 million, tax breaks, a promise of $400 million more in development and who knows what else is in this term sheet.

So glad the Mayor's not burdened by pessimism...and is optimistic about a downtown comeback. All of the communities still waiting to feel DC's "renaissance" don't have that luxury.
Mendelson just outlined a path around the CFO: Why couldn't the Council send the budget to Congress and say it was balanced? Lee said he'd disagree, but wouldn't try to stop D.C. from spending money. Bowser sounded on board, arguing forcefully in favor of short term borrowing...

For most of my childhood, my mom was an early childcare worker. She’s now a home health aide. Both are professions dominated by Black and brown women who are overworked, underpaid, and overlooked despite their essential role in our community. Keep fighting, Christina.
“It feels as though we are proposing to balance this budget on the backs of Black and Brown women in the childcare sector with the elimination of the Pay Equity Fund.”
I've never been more proud to serve alongside @chenderson, a true partner in the fight for our children and families.

They have murdered hundreds of aid workers, but those ones were brown Palestinians. Yesterday, Israel dared cross that invisible line and killed westerners w/ impunity. When will those with power say 🛑 We have become inured to the savagery being inflicted on our fellow humans.
There are no words to adequately convey the rage heartbreak of the Israeli govt murdering 7 aid workers. First and foremost, my deepest condolences and full solidarity with @WCKitchen, @chefjoseandres, and the families of the 7 heroes who gave their lives feeding Gazans.
Withhold the aide or shove the statement.
I am outraged and heartbroken by the deaths of seven humanitarian workers from World Central Kitchen, including one American, in Gaza yesterday. Incidents like yesterday’s simply should not happen. Here is my full statement.
