Some nice coverage on yesterday’s Web IQ launch from @CNET. I enjoyed discussing how search is shifting from human to agent-driven queries, why we’ve re-architected Bing’s stack to deliver more optimal search results for agents, and how @Microsoft is already leading this space in terms of quality, latency, and token efficiency, while powering nearly all AI systems including Copilot, ChatGPT, and more. As models become more of a commodity, our bet is that context such as fresh web data from Web IQ and the broader Microsoft IQ will become more critical and the true differentiator. In the era of the agentic web, the role of the web index needs to evolve to support very different needs across agents and humans. In traditional search, indexing determines which pages a user should visit. Ranking surfaces relevant results, but ultimately the responsibility of verifying information falls on the user. Web grounding for AI chatbots and agents is built on the same infrastructure but answers a different question: What information can the AI use to construct an accurate answer? Search helps users explore, while AI commits to an answer. The goal shifts from relevance and ranking to strength of evidence, traceability, and consistency – and trust matters more than ever.
