“Star Trek” is my go-to example for a franchise that proves you can have as much social commentary as you like so long as the stories and characters at its center are done well.
Ideally, when something original makes bank at the box office, studios would see its success and think to greenlight more original films like it rather than franchise it. I love franchises, but they alone can’t keep the lights on.
Timothy Dalton is at his best when he can go either full-on villain or unhinged with cold, psychotic tendencies:
“Top Gun: Maverick” is amazing for many reasons, from its spectacularly-shot action, well-done story that balances joy with heartstring-pulling, and well-written, endearing characters. Combined with all that though, it was the first movie where Miles Teller won me over. Kudos
Your enjoyment of “Big Momma’s House” hinges entirely on how funny you find the idea of Martin Lawrence using an old lady accent in a dress. Paul Giamatti, Nia Long, and Anthony Anderson earn some laughs, but this is one “House” I’d take a back road not to pass again. 2/5
What film did you appreciate more as you got older? “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” underwhelmed me on release in 2014, but over the past 10 years, its themes and complex characters continued on from the first movie have made it something I love revisiting.
Costume designer Lindy Hemming rules. She worked on both “Wonder Woman” movies, all 4 Pierce Brosnan 007s, “Casino Royale”, “Harry Potter & The Chamber of Secrets”, and won an Oscar for “Topsy-Turvy”. She always brings memorable and distinct looks to the characters. Keep going!
This year I have seen revisionism attempted for the “Fantastic Four” movies from the 2000’s and “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”. What a time to be a superhero nerd.

“The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” is….. fine. Its initial energy fizzles out during the midsection and the characters have the depth of Balogna slices, but the action is enjoyable enough and there some fun gags. I’ve seen better, I’ve seen worse, it’s alright. 2.5/5.
It sounds like “Challengers” is the hottest movie of the year. I remember first seeing Zendaya on the Disney show “Shake It Up” back in 2014 and thinking she had great presence and comic timing. I’m happy to see her film career flourishing.
Nickelback is a band. So that means somebody should have spun that off into Dimeside or Pennyfront
In case you need to hear it today, it’s fine to go to the movies alone. Why there’s a weird stigma around it is beyond me, but going to the movies by yourself is in no way strange.
Harvey Weinstein’s assault conviction was overturned today. Yeah he should never be allowed in power ever again.
Here’s hoping “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” rules. Of all the franchise reboots and continuations, it’s one of them that’s shown how different tones and approaches from the originals can work. While I miss the satire of the older movies, the characterizations compensate.
“Me Before You” doesn’t delve into the #moralcomplexities of its premise, but still succeeds as a #charming #romantic drama with a #warm approach and touches of #humor. #EmiliaClarke and #SamClaflin have appealing chemistry and the writing is generally solid. 3/5. See it.
I’m not sure how I would rate this, but I absolutely recommend it. The fact that this only cost $7 million is mind-blowing. It’s also really funny thinking about Bsnderas and Hayek re-teaming in children’s films after certain scenes here. Check it out on Netflix!

Agree 100 percent. Loved the different iterations he displayed in Rocketeer. The Nazi villain, the entitled superstar and the charismatic romantic. Imagine if he'd played Alec Trevelyan in Goldeneye opposite Brosnan just to mess with our heads.
Timothy Dalton is at his best when he can go either full-on villain or unhinged with cold, psychotic tendencies:

@allifromchicago @kevin_thecritic @rachel_reviews There is a window for a Prince of Persia movie to get another go around if they just have a culturally accurate cast. Especially since video game movies are getting better adaptions now. Even if it’s animated but aimed at adults
@kevin_thecritic Sadly they don’t make them like that any more (the cgi fests are just not the same) I do think the ending redeemed the third movie, but the 1st and 2nd will always be my go to for classic Spidey (Andrew and Tom also do pretty good) 😊 🕷️

@kevin_thecritic @DWLundberg Absolutely. The fact that “Prince of Egypt” is the only Western animated drama is so weird to me. Animation could be more elaborate and expansive if you get these stigmas out of the way of great storytelling. If anything, seeing how anime is popular should make heads turn.

@kevin_thecritic @DWLundberg I don't dislike “Emperor’s New Groove,” but I can't believe Disney looked at the director of the “Lion King” and said, “No thanks.” I also think keeping 2D animation is important. Disney's leadership was a terrible influence during the 2000s.

Not that any grown adult should care about Lion King lore but it’s weird that this Mufasa movie is positioning him as an orphan who came from nothing when there’s like multiple speeches he gave to Simba about their lineage of previous kings.
