Exodus was one of the first films about Israel that formed my Zionist identity. Of course, in my day, we all kvelled over Paul Newman. Then I read the Leon Uris book and it was unbelievably affecting. Better than the film, of course. Much harder. Another film to find in the archives is Cast a Giant Shadow, starring Kirk Douglas as Mickey Marcus, the American Jewish army officer who was responsible for whipping the new Israeli army into shape and winning the 1948 Israeli War for Independence. As a funny side note, the Bronx neighborhood where my Aunt lived (Holocaust survivor younger sister of my mother) had the Mickey Marcus movie theater. My aunt worked as the ticket seller part time when my cousins were in school. I didn’t even know who the theater was named for until much later when this movie came out when I was a teenager en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mickey_Ma…

The book is much better. I loved watching the Jews kill the Nazis. Still, the filmmakers inserted a bit too many Fiddler on the Roof elements that are absolutely not part of the factual story. The most egregious had to be the ongoing chess game between the Orthodox Jew and the Communist Jew. That was an eye roller for me.

The NYT is increasingly disgusting. In their eyes and the eyes of the readers they pander to, you can either be an oppressed or an oppressor; a victim or a perpetrator. So if you are a victim for real (like we have been so many times) and then you say “no more, never again” and act like you mean it, you are stripped of your victim status and must be vilified.

Last Friday, John Cardillo was on Dave Rubin’s Friday Roundtable and he told a story about driving from Long Island to the city along Northern Boulevard, which is one of the few east-west roads that runs nearly the entire length of Long Israel. He said when he reached Little Neck he saw all this Muslim stores and women in burkas. Well, this is wrong and I sent in a comment. Nope. Northern Boulevard, which happens to be the east-west road that is closest to where I live and does, indeed, go through Little Neck, in NOT the road he was on. Because I know Little Neck, on the other side of the Nassau-Queens border, very well. This area is 100% Asian, mostly Chinese and Korean, but with Thais, Japanese, and others. He must have been traveling west along either Hillside Avenue or Jericho Turnpike-Jamaica Avenue. Those areas ARE almost solidly Hindu and Muslim from South Asia. And, yes, it is getting increasingly solidly Muslim as you head further west into Queens. I used to live very close to this area. So I absolutely know. I never received any feedback on my correction.
