I was about 13 years old, the first time I “protested.” There was a corner store near my Nana’s house in SC and the owner had a framed Colored Only sign on the wall. It was not there as a Jim Crow sign, but it was framed and mounted like a small reminder of the past. I’m not even sure how long it stayed on the wall. My little mini-protest didn’t change anything (I’m almost certain that he didn’t know I was protesting) but I told my Nana and years later she gave me this sign in an old frame. The store is gone now, not sure if it burned down or was torn down but it lives large in my memory. 2 years ago, I added my ticket from the Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson Confirmation Hearing. How I wish my Nana could have been here to witness this herstoric moment. #StillWeRise #BlackGirlHerstory
@kayewhitehead Canadian here but I wanted to join the Freedom Riders in the ‘60s. Dad held me back. I probably would have wound up buried in a levee in Mississippi.
@kayewhitehead There was a building in my home town that had the words “colored entrance only” on the side of the building with a huge arrow pointing to the back of the building. It remained there until I was nearly 30. I’m in my sixties now. …and yes it’s the south.
