Radio 4's Any Answers had a woman call, defending the idea it's easy to get on the property ladder. "I bought at 24" "How" "I had two jobs, worked in holidays, saved a lot. Lived at home" etc etc "Anything else?" "My dad contributed to my deposit" "How much?" "It was substantial"
@ItsAndyRyan Fuck this. Had to wait until nearly 40, had zero deposit because ya know, military and living in a house costs money so hard to save. Bought shared ownership in the end because zero deposit but had enough monthly, but had to buy with crap interest then remortgage to buy outright.
@justamoocat @ItsAndyRyan I got shared ownership when made redundant from RAF under options for change in 1994. Had 25% ownership. The only downside is when you want to buy another share, the price is the going value for the house, not what it was when you bought the original share.
@justamoocat @ItsAndyRyan Why didn't your parents, if you had any, help you?
@justamoocat Yes, I was 39 when I got on the property ladder.
@justamoocat @ItsAndyRyan Are in the US? Did you try for a VA loan? I know there are plenty of qualifications on a VA loan that don’t make it easy but if you qualify, they’re great.
