Today is the 55th anniversary of the "War on Drugs" that ruined millions of Americans' lives, and a new study published by JAMA has officially confirmed what we all knew: addiction treatment is blocked by policy and payment barriers like insurance coverage gaps, low reimbursement, prior authorization, and documentation burdens. Our country spent decades expanding police, surveillance, and cages while leaving actual care inaccessible for the average person seeking treatment. It's a mass incarceration trap. Anyone who wants treatment for drug addiction shouldn't be punished for not being able to afford it or access it. We all know people who are affected by this. This is a public health crisis and the answer to solving it isn't criminalizing them.
