On this day in 1781 the throwing overboard at sea of more than 130 enslaved Africans began on the overcrowded British ship Zong. The award of an insurance claim payout for loss of “cargo” was thrown out at appeal – and stimulated campaigning by the UK’s abolitionist movement.
