Most people think Kubernetes Gateway API is only for Ingress. That’s wrong. Gateway API can also handle east-west (service-to-service) traffic. Here is how 👇 First you need to understand the GAMMA initiative. GAMMA --> Gateway API for Mesh Management and Administration Gateway API was originally designed to manage ingress traffic Meaning from traffic from outside the cluster to services inside the cluster (north/south case) GAMMA aims at extending Gateway API to service mesh internal traffic (east/west traffic) This mean, we can use the same Gateway API resources for ingress & mesh. But here is the difference 👇 Usually when using Gateway API resources like HTTPRoute, GRPCRoute etc, We specify parent references as Gateways. Because it is the entry point that owns the IP address and ports receiving traffic from outside the cluster. However, in GAMMA approach, When configuring mesh traffic, Gateway API resources like HTTPRoute can use Services as their parent references instead of Gateways. The HTTPRoute then defines how traffic arriving at that Service should be routed (Weighting, splitting, etc.). So the traffic goes like this. client → shared Service (backend) → version-specific Services (backend-v1, backend-v2) → pods Here you cannot use the "shared service + subsets" pattern like istio virtual service + Dest rules. The reason is that it is designed to be a standard that works across many different implementations (Istio, Linkerd etc). --- We share concepts like these and deep dives in our DevOps newsletter.
