Kudo's to MITs effort to support & enable the smart manufacturing journey with an emphasis on small to medium manufacturers ... youtube.com/watch?v=nkYCUs… To the MIT team, scrap the concept of 'machine learning' (ML) and transition to the mindset of true Machine Knowledge as the rise of industrial AI capabilities accelerates for manufacturing companies and their digitally augmented workforce.

Thx for sharing ... completely agreed re: need to focus critical for manufacturers to transition from pilot, sandbox experiments to specific value-add applications. Alto implied, I would reinforce manufacturers need to a) define what industrial AI can accomplish & how to operationalize induAI, incorporated into their smart manufacturing roadmap (w/clear line of sight to business value), and b) define the emerging skill requirements for the digitally augmented workforce. With the accelerating rise of induAI, scrap the concept of 'ML' (machine learning) and think true machine knowledge.

Industrial AI & the Industrial Base Renaissance 9.0 My ongoing X-thread, sharing brief insights associated with operationalizing industrial AI in manufacturing … the ‘J.A.R.V.I.S’ and ‘Tony Stark’ workforce of the digital factory. In my last post, I referenced a recent McKinsey estimate that the typical manufacturing company is only using 5% of the data & information available from the factory floor. An army of AI ‘savants’ and the inevitable evolution to Machine Knowledge is changing this outcome very quickly. However, I want to take a step back and briefly touch upon the numerous manufacturing companies that are very early in their smart manufacturing journey (often small & medium companies), many of whom have been bypassed by the ‘lean’ manufacturing / ‘Industry 4.0’ technologies & solutions of the last 10+ years. How can these manufacturers catch up? Think of the rise of industrial AI capabilities as a generational inflection point creating a massive competitive advantage opportunity to not only catch up but leap past the quickly fading into obscurity legacy manufacturing systems & solutions. Couple considerations for manufacturers in this unique position: > if not already in place, establish an overall smart manufacturing roadmap focused on a flexible, data-driven architecture to unlock factory-floor knowledge to make better real-time decisions, reduce complexity, solve operational challenges, etc (suggestions in my post #4) > establish data connectivity & collection on EVERYTHING in the operation … sensors, edge computing devices (think Opto22 Groov platform, x.com/opto22), many other to enable data & information to flow from the factory ‘edge’ > clearly define AI model expectations (see post #5) > focus industrial AI capabilities on ROI business priorities (see post #7 & #8) > accelerate the digitally literate, AI-savvy workforce … focus on next-gen skills related to the emerging ‘team’ i.e. digitally augmented worker & machines (touched upon in post #6) Additionally, I would recommend small & medium manufacturers take advantage of the U.S. Government ‘Manufacturing USA’ institutes, all of whom have excellent programs in place to help accelerate the smart manufacturing journey … CESMII is a great example (cesmii.org , x.com/CESMII_SM). Although adoption challenges lie ahead, small & medium manufacturers are uniquely positioned to quickly improve operational performance and out-innovate / out-compete their competition by leveraging the rise of industrial AI capabilities … an army of AI ‘savants’, replicating & exceeding the unaffordable, no longer necessary payroll burden of manufacturing data PhD scientists. The potential of true Machine Knowledge is the big game opportunity for manufacturing companies to drive business value & competitive advantage … as always, welcome any comments or DMs.
