@ThePrimeagen In my view, their fearmongering has less to do with selling to the public, and much more to do with selling to investors and government. If they condition the public to believe their technology is extremely dangerous, then it will be politically viable to build a regulatory moat.
I don’t know much about academic maths, and highest-level mathematics.
What I do know is it smells unethical for OpenAI to push a prof to publish their breakthrough with OpenAI, to get a cut of a $1M prize, with the condition they remove their co-researcher who from Anthropic
Wrote up my thoughts on the whole OpenAI Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem story, and how it highlights the still confusing question of what using my data "to improve model performance" actually means

There is literally research showing prompt injection has not been solved in Claude w/ auto mode plus recent examples from @wunderwuzzi23. Claiming otherwise to your user base is just irresponsible.
I am pleased to see that OpenAI’s new model is roughly on par with Gemini Flash and Opus 4.8 on prompt injection risk. Nice work!
Evaluating and naming other labs turns out to be a great way to encourage them to train more aligned models. We will continue to do this until other
this guy fucking called this months ago.
openai asked researchers to come use their models and do research with them.
now, a few months later:
math researchers getting fucking scooped by the lab they trusted with their work.
what a fucking precedent.
I think the plan is to get researchers to start using their AI with a limited compute budget, then once they have all the academic data, they’ll basically steal all their ideas from underneath them and run the research internally with their unlimited compute budget!
Two extraordinary charts from today’s PISA test results:
1) School test scores continue to collapse internationally, underscoring how this is no longer a Covid effect but sustained decline.
Those falls in reading and maths are equivalent to about two years of lost schooling.
"It's like everyone in the industry lost 30 IQ points."
This more than anything else rubs me so wrongly about the last few years. HN and Lobsters are now a shadow of what they used to be... Not just because half the content is AI-related but because the rest is so banal and intellectually unambitious.
I found a linklog the other day that's all classic-style tech stuff, curated by one person, and it was like breathing fresh air after being stuck in a rancid pigsty. dotat.at/:/
Worst is I don't like posting new stuff myself, because it will get fed back into the slop machines and regurgitated in a form that strips it of all the care and craft I put into it.

Because people like me, with a PhD in Computer Science, understand that the underlying maths on which modern AI is based of have limitations that cannot be overcome with better, cheaper HW or better techniques.
I really don’t understand people who do not think that the world is going to fundamentally change in the next few years.
We’re going to go through a substantial dislocation at a pace perhaps never felt before in the history of humanity.
What’s the problem w using LLMs to write stuff you want other people to read -emails, articles, posts- and why are people (like me!) so incredibly hostile that they will block you/mute you/block your domain, to never read anything from you again?
