If we have any real school pride, we must out forecast Harvard, UCLA and Chicago. (from the @metaculus Bridgewater tournament)
Since at least 1955, average team sizes in science have risen 15–20% per decade. As team science becomes more common and impactful, we need new ways to evaluate ideas and recognize contributions beyond the traditional individual-centered structures.

Meta is going to have 350,000 H100s by the end of the year. Given lead times, they probably had to start ordering them in 2022. How did Zuck know he'd need all these GPUs?
This chemical reaction could change the world. Olivine can react with CO2 in the ocean to form a harmless silt, trapping it. This natural process offers a cost-effective solution to climate change.
Are LLMs biased toward themselves? Frontier LLMs give higher scores to their own outputs in self-eval. We find evidence that this bias is caused by LLM's ability to recognize their own outputs This could interfere with safety techniques like reward modeling & constitutional AI
A feature in @reason on the progress movement: “It celebrates humanity's achievements so far. It judges progress not in technocratic terms but with an eye on outcomes for individual human beings” Quotes me/@rootsofprogress and @calebwatney/@IFP
I think that nanotech may be quite underrated right now, just like AI was a few years ago. The Drexler approach in particular feels quite possible with modern/future biotech. Do check out this thread and article.

One of my favourite articles of all time. Still as devastating today as it was when it was published!

The worst kind of media report is the complaint that some new technology like Bitcoin or AI uses a lot of energy. Yeah, that’s how civilization works. A lot of people would be a lot more useful for mankind if they focused on increasing supply instead of suppressing demand.
the most common mistake that people make when beginning to forecast is thinking that things often happen. in reality, very few things ever happen.
One year since GPT-4 release. Hope you all enjoyed some time to relax; it’ll be the slowest 12 months of AI progress for quite some time to come.
I think people should take on absurdly big questions more. I want more takes about what matters in the world, what truth is, and how we can make the future great.
A great piece from two incredible writers I've had the pleasure of meeting! Be sure to it out.

We spend more on roads then ever before, despite little to no increases in material prices and labor costs. Yet, with all this spending we don't get roads that are smoother, quieter and more environmentally friendly. An interesting piece on how we can do better.

This is by far the most incorrect take on here about programming.

Are BBC News app's push alerts the no 1 way that people in the UK get news? The BBC News at Six and Ten get 3-4m viewers each; the app has 11.9m UK users as of March 2022 and is the most-used news app by far. I assume not everyone has push alerts on, but probably most do.

Imho the questions are (a) do you believe in scaling laws (b) do you think OpenAI bc MSFT or Altman's Gulf connections or ML scientist human capital can scale faster/further (b) seems increasingly dubious to me
It seems like Google, Facebook and Anthropic have spun up LLMs as powerful as OpenAI’s, so maybe all the focus on what Sam Altman or the company is or isn’t doing is kinda overblown? Why am I wrong?
has humanity ever once solved a problem before it became a problem?
I'm going with the "GPT2" is not the same as "GPT-2" theories, #Strauss.
