The forecasts are a quarter behind. The EIA's August model put Q4 at $78 and rested on a premise stated in plain words: that Hormuz constraints would ease through August. August ended with six transits a day against a baseline of eighty-five. The premise failed, and the September issue lifted the number to $90. The value of this episode lies not in the error but in the fact that the assumption was spoken aloud and could be checked. Statistics show how big banks' forecasts actually work. It's nothing more than a game for interested parties.

#Oil in the ground is the cheapest part of the price. The decomposition shows that the cost of extraction accounts for roughly a seventh of the final price of diesel to an Asian consumer. Everything else is market premium, logistics, insured risk and refining margin. The practical meaning is that policy aimed at production acts on the smallest element of the structure.

The strangest combination of the year. In September the IEA deepened its projected decline in 2026 world demand to 2.5 mb/d — almost a million barrels worse than the August estimate and one of the sharpest downgrades in the agency's history. In the same month the price broke $100. Falling demand normally weighs on price. Here both move up in absolute terms because they share a cause: the physical unavailability of #oil makes it expensive and unwanted at the same time.
