In 2005, Stephen Slevin, a resident of New Mexico, was arrested on suspicion of DUI. He was subsequently held in solitary confinement for two years without ever facing prosecution, as prison authorities claimed they had "forgotten" about him. During his time in solitary confinement, Slevin suffered from malnutrition, significant weight loss, bedsores, fungal infections, and even had to extract his own tooth due to being denied dental care. In 2013, Slevin was awarded $15.5 million in a lawsuit for the neglect he endured.
