Firstly the the move to LOI (a good thing) & Brexit (bad overall but good for football) means we have a national academy system under LOI clubs with players not able go to the UK until 18 (EU16). This is a great opportunity for clubs to develop irelands best players (2/7)
The problems: 1. Facilities are not good enough. Most clubs do not have ownership of sites and none remotely compare to GAA county development centres. This requires urgent targeted state support. It should be matched funding ring-fenced to allow bigger clubs build more. (3/7)
2. The state needs to facilitate the delivery of core third level subjects from TY to 6th year on academy sites. This will enable players to do both on one site drastically increasing contact hours which are now mostly evening only and well below what’s required. (4/7)
3. Clubs receive €12k per year from the FAI to run academies that cost €0.5m per annum. (2.5% funded) Even with better facilities and education clubs cannot currently then deliver levels of full time coaches required immediately, this needs support with PAYE/taxes back. (5/7)
With appropriate supports across the 3 core issues clubs will: 1. Develop Ireland’s players properly. 2. Vastly increase transfer fees as they will be viewed as appropriate. Number 1 ensures our national teams improve and number 2 allows them become financially secure. (6/7)
If the state, with clubs/FAI does not act on these core issues we are letting down our very best players in Irelands most played game. Our clubs don’t need constant financial support just a focused package to enable them reach a level that’s the norm across Europe (7/7).
