It’s not just that Slobodian suffered no harm for misrepresenting the evidence in such an egregious way, that would be bad enough, it’s that he actually benefited from it, because there is a whole industry of activist scholars and journalists who believe that everything bad in the world is somehow the result of the influence of a few intellectuals who died a long time ago.

If a historian on the right abused evidence in this way, they'd face career ruination. When Boston University's Quinn Slobodian does it, he gets a Guggenheim fellowship, book awards, and a Hewlett Foundation grant. Academia's rot runs far deeper than a simple crisis of rigor.

At least three significant unforced errors are factors in the failure of yesterday’s PIC session to select a new @OHR_BiH: 1. The US insisted on Christian Schmidt’s resignation before they had secured the buy-in of the other relevant allies for a successor, and by misreading the degree of European concern with recent US policy in Bosnia - and presumably US policy towards Europe as a whole - over the past year and a half. Rather than try to massage that opinion into a shape acceptable to Washington, the US side decided to take the disagreements public. Odd and unnecessary across the board. 2. The European culture of passivity continues to be a cancer eating away at the core of any sense of a ‘geopolitical’ EU. The sad fact is, most of what the US Embassy said yesterday has been true of European policy in Bosnia for more than two decades: it’s incoherent, ineffectual, and it is damaging to BiH. The Americans have a candidate, and they have a program. I may have personal concerns and even objections to that program but it’s at least has the shape of an action plan. The Europeans were incapable of identifying a joint candidate until just a few days ago. And a few days before that, most were still of the opinion that OHR is unnecessary, and the leading think tank authority on the subject in most capitals still argues it’s a colonial artifact. And beyond that? No movement on EU sanctions vs. Dodik, no accession movement for Sarajevo, no major projects. 3. Sarajevo is only now lurching out of its long-time political hibernation but moving too slowly to capitalize on a major opportunity. If the major powers are at odds with each other it is local actors who can determine the broad shape of their policies in Bosnia, or at least key aspects of its. I wrote an article for @odgovor_ba a few weeks ago (linked) suggesting what a fair set of ‘trade offs’ for Sarajevo might look like. Other modalities are possible obviously. But has anyone among the relevant pro-Bosnian leaders thought to articulate these, to draft a white paper, to offer a list of asks and concessions? Governance is not a spectator sport, which only Dodik and Covic seem to understand in Bosnia. For better or for worse, BiH still needs the OHR. For it to function effectively and for it to cease its operations in line with the 5+2 Agenda requires a far greater degree of alignment between Atlanticist forces - American, European, and Bosnian alike. odgovor.ba/article/15115

Eric Hobsbawm defined darkness not as a apocalyptic break but as the state where everyone "gets used to living under conditions which should not be tolerated". Getting used to livestream genocide, carpet bombings and now threat of imminent nuclear attack is living in darkness.

@DrRadchenko @nfergus Political scientist Josip Glaurdic drew upon the same quote in the conclusion of his study "The Hour of Europe" on why the West failed to prevent Serbia's wars in Croatia and Bosnia in the 1990s.

Perhaps a minor point but I have often reflected when reading about the fall of various authoritarian regimes of all the wasted resources. The exorbitant fortunes spent on, ultimately useless, repressive security services, mass surveillance, and the tools of terror, while entire generations are left uneducated, dispossessed, and scattered far from their ancestral homes. Heavy is the debt of despotic rule.

@MR57129325 There is little evidence for it. I have read thousands of pages of UK archival documents from 1990–92. Very little to support that islamophobia drove British policy twrds BiH.

A key part of late republican/early imperial period (by which I mean right now) is abandoning even the pretense of constitutional limits on the war making powers of the Princeps Americae and the military bureaucracy.

@cirijab43791 But by 1995, the Bosnian government had to a large extent left its multinational policy and increasingly become bosniak nationalist.

@RegretaMoonberg @suljagicemir1 SDS and HDZ also withdrew their support from the Cuthileiro talks. Also not aware of any conclusive evidence that the Americans urged Izetbegovic to do so.
