Helsinki hat diese Woche das erreicht, wovon viele 🇩🇪 Städte nur träumen. In den letzten 12 Monaten gab es dort keinen einzigen tödlichen Verkehrsunfall und nur 277 Verletzte. Zum Vergleich: In der ähnlich großen Stadt Leipzig gab es 2024 über 4200 Verletzte und 38 Tote. Die 🇫🇮 Hauptstadt weitet seit Jahren konsequent Tempo 30 aus, baut Straßen um und v.a. baut Fußgängerzonen und sichere Fahrradwege immer weiter aus. Was für eine Erfolgsgeschichte und der Beweis, wie leicht Verkehrstote zu verhindern sind, wenn der politische Wille da ist. Diesen Willen brauchen wir in 🇩🇪 jetzt endlich auch!

Ecologically harmful decision by the Slovak gov to kill 350 brown bears! This will affect bear population in adjacent countires, incl. PL. It is disappointing that no science-based solution was found to minimize human-bear conflicts. I hope this decision can still be reversed -

The world of organised gardening is a problem. Yes gardening is a wholesome, delightful activity which gets people outside and brings them closer to nature. The more people who garden the better. But the gardening philosophy espoused by most garden designers, gardening books and TV shows, garden centres and so on is one of micromanagement and a rejection of actual nature. As if somehow nature doesn’t do it right. A delicate carpet of native wildflowers at the woodland edge in spring, fringed with blossoming scrub, is just not good enough. Instead we must cut, tidy, mow, organise, chemically spray and subjugate every square inch. We must replace native species with colourful, exotic plants from around the world which offer nothing to our own wildlife. Which is why the results so often look like some gaudy roundabout in the suburbs. Commercial landscape design is even worse, because they do the same, but as cheaply as possible and without the love. And this mindset of control over nature which originates in gardening circles pervades all land management in Britain. Those straight lines and electric green fields, all the scrub, rough edges and dead wood tidied away to perfection, streams artificially straightened, it all comes from gardening. It’s not just down to the quest for increased farm productivity that this happens beyond the garden gate, the goal has been to garden the life out of entire landscapes too. Consider how many figures in the gardening world despise the notion of rewilding. Think Monty Don, Alan Titchmarsh, Carol Klein, they hate it. For them, the very idea of allowing beavers, say, the autonomy to create their own beavery paradises along our watercourses is just appalling. Only *they* know what trees should be planted in a neat line alongside the river and they’ll be damned if any beaver is going to get in the way of that. It’s a peculiarly British affliction this obsession with control, tidying and modifying nature to within an inch of its life. Thankfully change is undoubtedly in the air. A growing number of people are realising that there’s plenty to get on with in a wilder garden, and that making space for buzzing bees, dragonflies, songbirds and hedgehogs in our gardens and everywhere is pure joy - especially when compared with waging chemical warfare out of a bottle against them. Not only do gardens make up a big chunk of the land in this country, but the prevailing gardening mindset influences the way all our land is managed. Change can’t come soon enough.
