This argument is idiotic. If his actions were tied strictly to 7th-century Arabia, then why didn't the religion freeze there? Why is he claimed to be the perfect, timeless exemplar for all mankind? The structural problems this creates for a religion are glaring. By your own admittance, Muhammad is not a safe example. You cannot give a teenager his unfettered life history and trust them to emerge with a predictable moral template; they would need constant guidance to sift through what fits modern standards and what does not. Even today, some people embrace child marriage because of his example; I recently saw an Imam state that he would have gladly handed Muhammad his six-month-old daughter if he had the privilege. Similarly, there are Muslims today who turn to terrorism because of those exact same texts. Under this framework, it is all fair game. I know many Muslims who are wonderful people, who align with modern moral standards, and whom I deeply respect. But they are good people because of their own discernment, their personal application of virtue, and the surrounding influence of a Western culture shaped by Christianity. They are good despite Islam, not because of it. Christianity is structurally entirely different. Hand anyone the life of Jesus, and if they follow it verbatim, they are guaranteed to be transformed into pacifists who love their enemies and entirely entrust their lives to God.
