@Light3675 @ABu9283792 Oh interesting, hmm. That makes sense to me!
Yes, my family has roots with the Nadar community. If you look at the table, Nadar, Kallar, etc.. have low steppe than Vellalar, Mudaliar. Even the SC community Pallan has a higher steppe than Nadar, Kallar. What these “dry land” communities have in common is that they inhabited the thorn scrub forests. People in these regions led a more pastoralist, warrior-like life and relied on millet cultivation. Nadars I guess relied on toddy tapping, so slightly different there. Seems to be that these regions could have a slightly different genetic profile? Not sure tho, and even so not sure why this was the case.
Makes sense, but I can’t help but notice that many dry land communities in Tamil Nadu have distinctly lower steppe in the table above relative to communities in the wetlands. Sure the steppe difference isn’t massive by any means (3% vs 6%), but perhaps still? I was also surprised 23andMe picked up my exact community/sub-region in Tamil Nadu. So might be a meaningful enough of a distinction.
Maybe at a glance this is true - particularly the religion lens. But hmm I doubt the culture is that alien. Culturally I would feel Indians would be closer to Americans than Arabs/North Africans, and Sub-Saharan Africans. Likely similar cultural distance to South-East Asians and Central/Southern America. Americans though yeah likely feel more relatable to europeans, Turkish, Persian, and East Asian culture.
Ah, interesting. Yeah that makes sense. Hard to predict conservatism and liberalism though honestly. What makes Irish more liberal than Italian? What makes English/german so conservative? Nords and Swedes, would have never known there were a world apart. Hard to find a unifying theory at a glance
@The_Equationist @Tushar15 Is it really the invasions at fault here? I feel the region just did not incentivize temple centered economies like South India did. It instead, was centered on the kshathriyas and their political boundaries. Very different ecologies at play here
I think hence it is important to measure openness distinctly from the object of interest. It psychologically resonates with the rest of the world. In the western world, we always assume high openness means a high interest in a breadth of objects. Carl Jung I believed modeled openness much better than Big 5.
Indians place a heightened emphasis on relationships and hence humans. When combined with High IQ/High Openness - Indians naturally have a huge interest in anthropology, psychology, politics, philosophy, and spiritualism. We see it today, and we see it in ancient India with
Indians place a heightened emphasis on relationships and hence humans. When combined with High IQ/High Openness - Indians naturally have a huge interest in anthropology, psychology, politics, philosophy, and spiritualism. We see it today, and we see it in ancient India with Hinduism being the greatest evidence of this.
Strongly believe this. Indians can do anthropology like no one else.
I believe this too. And I think the driver behind this is interesting (since I see it in myself as well). Indians place a high significance in relationships and people - and hence drawn to people and humans naturally. When Indians have high openness and high IQ - they naturally gravitate towards anthropology at much higher rates than other races (instead of fields like idk - space exploration)
@razibkhan By what definition are you extremely extroverted - is it in line with Big 5 Extroversion or Carl Jung’s definition? Two very different (though sometimes correlated) things.
This is all also happened in a time period where the western world entered a period of political instability. With income inequality being the greatest it has ever been, the people of the western world have relatively lower trust and higher status sensitivity than they did during the 70s/80s.
Indians have the following traits that make them appear distinct abroad: - a recent immigrant group - a heightened emphasis on relational/social bonds - heightened status sensitivity - higher extroversion than East Asians (who tend to be much more introverted on avg) - tend to be
Indians have the following traits that make them appear distinct abroad: - a recent immigrant group - a heightened emphasis on relational/social bonds - heightened status sensitivity - higher extroversion than East Asians (who tend to be much more introverted on avg) - tend to be highly successful abroad Together it creates an identity anchored in Indian culture, tight social circles, narcissist attitudes, and create status sensitivity in others - all while being a culturally dominant force
Number of Chinese origin people in USA are 5.5 million and number of Indian origin people are 5.2 million. Yet the hate against NRIs is much more. What could be the reason?
My intuition is that Marathi and Kannada had a similar common ancestor. Then diverged to form South Dravidian and an old version of Marathi. Then South Dravidian expanded across peninsular India from Karnataka during the late Neolithic. This then formed the basis of all South Indian languages (with Telugu being a bit more peculiar). Marathi instead became more connected to more northern parts of India and went down a different path in terms of script/language. Likely due to its different trade networks.
Well correct me if I am wrong, no other Indic language uses Mama for both father in law and mother’s brother. Only the southern languages and marathi. But yes, Mama itself is used in other Indic languages. Well tAy is actually used in Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam for mother - so that is also fascinating Marathi is similar.
Well yes parts of the language is interesting. I was surprised they had the same concept of other Dravidian languages where your maternal uncle is called “Mama”. This is also the same word used to reference your father-in-law. Father in law = Mother’s brother The fact that they are the same word means Marathi’s historical had the same kinship system as South Indians. Also the Dhangar community in MH has many cultural similarities to the kuruba community in Karnataka - suggesting they had the same origin and diverged at a point. If you look at Neolithic sites too, both of these regions form a cluster of sites and then diverge in the late Neolithic period.
Haha def not a science by any means, mostly just intuition here. I took the average Malaysian IQ as 92. I think this was @jensenjeans’s estimate. Indian/Malay I estimated to be 89.5 ish. The assumption being, Chinese IQ is 100. This I also took from Jensen. I estimated there to be a slight under-selection of IQ in the migrants that went to Malaysia. This I estimated to be around 1 IQ point. I did that through a slightly weird methodology. I got the caste demographics of Tamil Malaysians and computed a weighted average literacy rate based on the 1931 British census. It happened to be just a bit below average TN literacy rate. I also did an adjustment based on demographic expectation (SCs made up 33% of Tamil Malaysians, but 20% of them back at home). With these adjustments, I got a Tamil average of 90.5 IQ. By my judgment was when going over literacy reports from the British census, I extrapolated the other states. I got roughly the same answer around ~90 across the Telugu states, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Punjab. Kerala being the exception likely near 93. So yes, no science by any means. But my rough intuition. I think though it logically checks out. In China, the nation average is 100 IQ while the coastal cities can be near 110 IQ. In India I’d say the average IQ is 90, we can assume middle class/upper middle class families leveraging semi-first world infrastructure in cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, etc.. should have an average IQ of 100. And this is exactly somewhat near the average IQ of Indian-Americans (103) according to the ABCD dataset. Seems to check out in a way?
