It’s been a big week for the AI and math community. Meanwhile, on the physical science side of the world, things are just starting to heat up. This week, we’ve posted our new benchmark for formalizing quantum information and computation: arxiv.org/abs/2609.05157, github.com/Axiomatic-AI/A… by the @Axiomatic_AI team. The crucial bit: we (Winston Yin, Frank Koppens, @Dirk_Englund and I) used our autoformalization system to autonomously solve every exercise in Nielsen and Chuang (it’s a great book: cambridge.org/highereducatio… ) using Lean. The benchmark is the final theorems along with the definitions you need to prove them; we’re keeping the proofs away from the internet for now, as well as the library we’ve built — but if you want to use this for the upcoming QIP deadlines, we are happy to provide autoformalization for teams that reach out. As far as we know, this is the first textbook scale autoformalization of physics, e.g., with minimal human involvement. We say minimal, rather than none, because there’s a crucial difference in formalization versus proving. While Lean is incredible for checking that the proof follows from the statement, it does not check that the statement is the thing you meant to prove. While in math this gap can be small, in physics it is often complicated. As we go over in the blog post example, we can ask whether Alice and Bob can convert |ψ⟩ to |φ⟩ using LOnoCC (local operations and NO classical communication). To state that in Lean we had to decide what a local operation is (a Stinespring dilation on one factor: adjoin a pure ancilla, apply a unitary, discard the ancilla), what "no communication" means (neither unitary depends on the other's outcome), and what "identical non-zero entries" means (a relation between the two reduced density operators). Back to the benchmark: AxQM is 1,019 lean statements covering each labeled theorem, example, and exercise, with the proofs removed. As to why we can do this now, it could be obvious that finite-dimensional QM is a great entry point for using Lean, given the existing strengths of Mathlib. With the recent multi-million LOC Lean solutions from the OpenAI team (maybe?) inspired by Buckmaster and Alpöge (as well as related work from Anandkumar et al.), continuum PDEs and other more challenging points of physics are on the table. Wild times ahead.
