Every time a doctor is like, "Do you want to step out?" and my husband is like, "No," it cracks me up so much 🤣. There's always this pregnant pause where it's obvious the doctor is trying to process what just happened.
@harmonizedgrace Nix absolutely NEVER leaves me alone in a medical setting anymore. Just not ever. It's strange. Everyone seems to think that's controlling or whatever, but he knows & I know & you know & everyone honest will admit that I better treatment if he's in the room.
@AmysMargin @harmonizedgrace It pays to have a Marine with you in the room, right?
@gcnewsman @harmonizedgrace Honestly, having an adult male in the room almost invariably improves quality of care for a female patient.
@gcnewsman @harmonizedgrace They are FAR LESS LIKELY to assume a woman is exaggerating or "being hysterical" if a man is with her and they listen more carefully, speak more politely, & it's just all around a less anxiety-riddled & demeaning experience.
@AmysMargin @harmonizedgrace I can see where that would be the case. Doesn’t that say a lot, though, about how doctors view women? That they are more likely to talk down to them if a man isn’t around.
@gcnewsman @harmonizedgrace Yes, it does. It does, indeed.
@gcnewsman @harmonizedgrace and for the record, I do not raise my voice. I do not weep. I do not use hyperbolic language or overrate my pain. Doesn't matter. I'm a female, so they ignore almost everything I say. Always have. When I take Nix with me, it's like magic. All of a sudden, I'm a person.
@gcnewsman @harmonizedgrace Nix has actually gone to doctor's office visits with female friends and family members for the same reason, by request. All women know this is a thing.
@AmysMargin @gcnewsman This actually hasn't been my experience, but I believe you 🤷♀️
@harmonizedgrace @gcnewsman I should have limited my scope to "women receiving medical care through the military system." It isn't fair for me to paint the entire field.
