But when the language is so frequent in Scripture, 'Circumcise your hearts, make them new, walk in my ways,' and yet the new heart is God's work, and it is He who causes us to walk in them, the sound is not harsh in those ears that are used to it."
John Humfrey:
"I will say no more, therefore, to this Paper, but I will write my Sheet out for my own sake. I know, for God to require faith on our part to bring us into covenant, and yet promise it—to require a condition and yet give it—may sound strange to human reason.+
"Speaking of faith as it now exists in us, who have received the proposal of things to be believed from the Prophets, the Apostles, and their successors—that is, the Supreme Pontiffs as heads of the Church—faith, with respect to assent, is ultimately resolved into divine truth as
THE APPROVAL AND AUTHORITY OF SAINT AUGUSTINE IS FAR SUPERIOR TO THE APPROVAL AND AUTHORITY OF THE OTHER FATHERS OF THE CHURCH:
"So great is the envy of certain adversaries that they wish to pluck out our very eyes so that we cannot perceive the disparity, extending far and wide, between the authority of Saint Augustine and that of the other holy Fathers; a disparity which can in fact be grasped without any special effort or reflection, by the mere act of seeing. We therefore establish that this excess by which Augustine surpasses the other Fathers of the Church in approval and authority is to be considered under four degrees: the degree of number, the degree of time, the degree of manner of speaking, and the degree of necessity. By these four degrees, the authority of Saint Augustine is shown to surpass that of the other holy Fathers, as will now be explained.
The first degree is that of number, according to which Augustine surpasses the other Fathers in the multitude of those who approve him. For there are far more writers who have commended the doctrine of Saint Augustine than those who have approved the positions of the other Fathers. In the preceding chapter, more than thirty-four Supreme Pontiffs, five Ecumenical Councils, a far greater number of national councils, almost innumerable holy Fathers, and most celebrated writers from every order have been enumerated as having, throughout the course of the centuries, praised and confirmed the doctrine of Augustine—especially in those matters concerning grace. In order, therefore, that the adversaries might match the commendation given to our Doctor with equal authority, they would need to produce an equal number of witnesses of the same dignity; but where such a multitude could be found, is not easily seen.
The second degree is that of time, by which the authority of Saint Augustine surpasses that of the other Fathers insofar as his doctrine has been approved across a continuous span of time. For throughout perpetual time—thirteen or fourteen uninterrupted centuries—the doctrine of Augustine has been approved, commended, and defended. Hence, the same kind of assent seems to be owed to Augustinian doctrine as is given to Traditions; for we receive Traditions because they transmit what our fathers received from their fathers, and those from others, from the very beginning. Since, therefore, the doctrine of Augustine has been continuously proclaimed from the time in which he lived down to our present age without interruption, the assent given to Tradition appears likewise to be due, in some analogous way, to the Augustinian testimony. In this respect Augustine is far superior to the other Fathers, whose successive commendation cannot be shown to have endured with such constancy or over such a long span of time.
The third degree is that of manner of speaking, according to which Augustinian doctrine is shown to surpass others by the very mode in which the holy Fathers themselves have praised Augustine. For although other Doctors of the Church are called pillars of the Church, hammers of heretics, irrefragable doctors, and are adorned with other similar titles, nevertheless Augustine alone is called the Father of Fathers and Doctor of Doctors, as is read in the fifth century from Possidius. Of Augustine alone it is said that his judgments are to be held as Apostolic, so that whoever would wish to contradict Augustine in anything shows himself to be a heretic by that very act, as is found in Serapion and Arnobius from the same period. Likewise, of Augustine alone it is said that the Fifth Synod consecrated his doctrine, and that, above all the Fathers, recourse is to be had to his authority, as was proclaimed at the Council of Florence in the fifteenth century; and further, that it is impious to contradict him, as Saint Albert the Great affirms."--R. This is why Protestant Deformation sucks. It's always hating on natural reason as if they're opposed. Also, St. Thomas always affirmed the supernaturality of mysteries of the faith.
Valentin Loscher, a lutheran, against the reformed on the Necessity of Works for salvation:
"That works are necessary for salvation, teach Calvin in his institutes, Beza, Zanchius, and Piscator. Even Dr. Holzfuss recently defended this very thing!"
you mean nothing but as we do, or your meaning is but this, that the Effects being indeed made ours, his Righteousness is relatively only to be said ours in regard to those Effects."
John Humfrey:
"How much more ingenuous had it been then for you to make the acknowledgment of your coming up here to me and Mr. Baxter, and said plainly, that though you have said, that Besides the Effects made ours, the very Righteousness of Christ is imputed to Believers; +
