@Deutungshoheit Hoping China doesn’t pull a Fable on their open source models isn’t a strategy.
The only way for Europe to catch up on US and Chinese models is to adopt a PPP structure similar to how roads or airports are financed. Government underwrites the risk of building massive data centers, giving European labs access to scaled compute at below-market prices.
This is a really well written and argued case so it’s worth your time - but I strongly disagree. We live in a world of trade-offs, especially so if you are suggesting you use €100Bns of tax-payers money. So here are your options with what you can do with that capital to build
@Deutungshoheit €100bn isn’t crazy amounts given what’s at stake for Europe. Germany approved a defense special budget of similar size. And before inference on open models becomes interesting, Europe needs an open model that’s competitive with US / China frontier labs.

We trained a ~frontier Deep Research Agent on academic budget > 32 H100s > 8K synthetic samples > fully open training infra + recipe (SFT, mid-training, RL) > models of diff sizes (2B -> 35B) ready to use out of the box This is yet another demonstration of how the frontier of AI is changing. We have reached a point where open models + a small capable team + a few hundred Ks can produce specialized models with ~frontier capabilities. SITUATION DETECTED: For the first time in internet history, agentic traffic has surpassed human traffic online, per Cloudflare Radar.
There are 12 venture-backed companies that raised >$3B in private markets and then listed in the US. Only one that has a positive return today, relative to the S&P 500's performance over the same period. Most are deeply negative (aggregate -117%). Only two that were positive at lockup expiry, neither stayed that way. The high cost of private capital means the companies that raise the most, and stay private longer, are almost inevitably overvalued as insiders raise the price of funding events aggressively to stay NPV positive.

Had two memory leaks by ChatGPT macOS app on Tahoe in the last four days, causing the ChatGPT app to grow to 40GB RAM - freezing my whole computer. Codex says based on logs the cause might be „ChatGPT 1.2026.118’s helper service path/registration was failing, and the app leaked Swift async continuations while retrying or waiting on that helper.“
