Three years in Dubai has taught me something nobody ever wrote on a Western opinion page.
The whole “you need democracy to be free” thing is a marketing campaign.
What you actually need is a government that does its job. Streets that work. A bank that doesn’t treat you like a suspect for earning money. Schools that teach. Hospitals that heal. Police that show up. Borders that filter. A passport that opens doors instead of closing them.
The West sold the world on the idea that voting every 4 years for two interchangeable parties was the highest form of human freedom. Meanwhile the country they called authoritarian built the cleanest, safest, most efficient city most of these critics will never see in person.
Freedom isn’t a ballot. It’s the ability to walk home at 1 AM, raise your kids in peace, run a business without getting punished for it, and live a life the people in charge don’t actively try to make harder.
Dubai has more of that than London, Paris, Berlin, San Francisco, and Toronto combined right now. The voters in those cities can vote all they want. They’ve been voting themselves into a slower decline for a decade.
I didn’t move here for the weather. I moved here because this was the first place I lived where the country was actually on my side. 🇦🇪

EXPECTED TERMS OF US-IRAN PEACE DEAL:
1. Extends ceasefire between US and Iran for 60 days
2. Begins 60-day negotiation period for technical discussions around Iran's nuclear program
3. Removes US Naval blockade and reopens Strait of Hormuz
4. US will commit to discuss sanctions relief with Iran
5. US will commit to discuss the release of frozen Iranian funds
6. Peace deal includes permanent end to fighting on all fronts, including Lebanon
7. Final agreement to be signed on June 19th in Switzerland
We expect to receive more detail on terms shortly.
BREAKING: President Trump says a deal with Iran is scheduled to be signed tomorrow, describing it as an agreement that would prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz to global shipping.
Trump said no money would be exchanged as part of the deal and claimed Iran’s nuclear material would eventually be recovered and destroyed under the agreement. He also warned that if the process fails, the United States retains what he called “the ultimate alternative.”
🇺🇸 The U.S. just deemed an AI model so dangerous that nobody on earth is allowed to use it, including the government itself.
The Trump administration moved to block all foreign access to Anthropic's most advanced models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick notifying CEO Dario Amodei that they now fall under export controls.
The trigger, per an administration official, was another company's claim that it had jailbroken Mythos, raising national security alarms.
The administration had reportedly tried to get Anthropic to delay the release and failed.
The result is a strange bind.
Anthropic already sits on a Pentagon blacklist deeming the models too risky for the government's own use, and now a Commerce regime deems them too risky for foreign use.
Rather than navigate the licensing maze, the company cut off access for every customer late Friday, calling it a "misunderstanding" it's working to resolve.
The official said the lockdown stays until the government hardens its own security, possibly within weeks, stressing that Trump "does not want to hurt the industry."

The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees.
The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance.
Access to all other Claude models is not affected.
We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible.

Breaking Amazing News: Brigadier Pilot Gholam Ali Tahmasbi, commander of the Kerman Air Base of the Islamic regime in Iran, who oversaw operations against Gulf countries, has been killed. God bless America. God bless every soldier who stands against terrorism and in defense of their country and its allies. God bless the Iranian people.
🚨🇺🇸🇮🇷 BREAKING: The U.S. has begun airstrikes on Iran.
Explosions confirmed across four locations: Sirik, Minab, Isfahan, and Qeshm Island.
Isfahan is not a random target. It's one of Iran's most critical industrial and military hubs.
Four simultaneous locations means this is coordinated. A campaign, not a warning shot.

BREAKING: President Trump says he directed the US Military to execute a “secret mission” in the Strait of Hormuz which resulted in over 100 million barrels of crude oil crossing through Hormuz.
🚨 NOW: IRAN IS REPORTEDLY BEING STRUCK by a SECOND WAVE of US self defense strikes, following round one at the direction of President Trump
EXPLOSIONS heard near Bandar Abbas as well 👀
They downed a US Apache and failed to take out two of our pilots, so 47 is now FIRING BACK
🚨 UPDATE: President Trump reveals Iran has AGREED to NEVER obtain a nuclear weapon in any form
"They've conceded the fact that they will not have nuclear weapons. We had a clause in there that we will not develop nuclear weapons and everybody was very happy with it except me. And I said, well, what happens if they not develop, but they go out and purchase, they acquire!"
"I want to put the word, if they buy or purchase or acquire, you've got to have that in there too because that's not developing."
Tesla FSD Supervised is now officially working in the UAE.
Self-driving cars are already cruising around our streets smoothly.
Honestly, the UAE never waits around — always at the forefront.
Big investor dropping truth: The UAE now attracts more capital than London and Singapore combined.
BlackRock just invested close to a billion dirhams in Abu Dhabi, even with everything going on in the region.
The big players see the future — and it’s here
Starlink V3 satellites have >10X bandwidth of V2 and there’ll be >10X launched, which means >100X more bandwidth.
Also, altitude will be 350km vs 550km, so min latency can be cut in half.
Light travels 300km/ms in space, so physics round trip min latency drops to <5ms.
New video released by the Kuwaiti government shows the moment an Iranian drone strike slammed into the country’s major international airport.
The footage captures what looks like a direct impact followed by a massive explosion, sending smoke and debris into the air as part of the airport complex erupts.
Kuwaiti authorities say one person was killed and more than 60 others were injured in the strike.
Wednesday’s attack marks a major escalation as tensions across the region continue to rise.
Today we’re introducing Gemma 4 12B — our latest open model that brings advanced agentic reasoning, vision and audio directly to your laptop.
It delivers performance nearing our larger Gemma models with a much smaller total memory footprint, while being small enough to run locally with just 16GB of VRAM. It’s open and accessible for everyone to use under a permissive Apache 2.0 license.
This is all made possible by our new, unified architecture that removes separate multimodal encoders. Here’s how we did it 🧵
A side effect of vibe coded applications is the great learning opportunity (learning the hard way).
You let the AI wing it. You just tell it LGTM and "fix this" and "add that." At some point, you hit a wall and not even the most advanced LLM can get you further.
You realize that you can't neglect the fundamentals of software engineering. You end up discarding the project (or most of it) or refactor it with the help of AI, where you carefully vet the modules and code to make sure they are doing what they're supposed to do.
Finally, you learn that human+AI is > than AI or human alone. AI coding agents are great when an experienced software engineer is in command.
Unpopular opinion: just because companies can ship features faster w/ AI doesn't mean they should.
Slow down.
Use the saved to actually test the feature: go through the edge cases, put it in front of real humans, refine it, and actually consider whether it's even a good idea.
So every time I say the word 'workflow' in Claude Code...
(let's say, when I'm creating a new GitHub workflow)
...it tries to enter 'workflow' mode, spinning up dozens of subagents to complete my task.
Stupid fucking thing
The UAE continues its remarkable economic rise. 🇦🇪📈
• 6.2% GDP growth
• Non-oil economy projected to reach 1.9 trillion AED by 2025
• Non-oil sector growing at 6.8%
A clear testament to the UAE’s successful economic diversification and visionary leadership.
Strong, stable, and forward-moving.
