To understand why DSA keeps winning, it's important to understand that after 2018, the DSA wing of the party (@AOC) reached an accommodation with the establishment wing (@SpeakerPelosi). The establishment wing would embrace the Woke/rad-Left culture agenda of BLM/DEI radicalism, open borders, & trans, while the DSA wing would sideline its populist economic agenda. Even @BernieSanders went along with this when he ran in 2020. And that strategy appeared to work with Biden's victory that year. But then, since 2024, the DSA and Democratic base have skillfully blamed their loss on the establishment wing of the party, even though the radical issues the establishment lost on (open borders, DEI extremism, trans) all came from the DSA/rad-Left. The DSA/rad-Left then pivoted toward affordability/economic issues and backgrounded the unpopular culture war stuff. I think Nothing Left by @evanwch is an important book because it contributes to a better understanding of what exactly happened within the party over the last decade. Evan also credits the rise of the progressive/rad Left of the Party to its growing savvy at things like fundraising.

Ask any Russian intelligence officer about “naruzhka” and you’ll see them nod with recognition. It’s the short term for physical surveillance—watchers on the street who follow targets, track meetings, and report patterns. The Russians are experts at it, and they have been for centuries, dating back to Ivan the Terrible's secret police, the oprichniki, who terrorized their own people. Russia today is the very embodiment of the total surveillance state, and the #RussianIntelligence services (RIS) use surveillance as both an offensive and defensive tool for the state. This is Post 7 in a series I call "RAZVED Intel Aware," including analysis from my upcoming book: "Tradecraft, Tactics, and Dirty Tricks." Chapter 4 in my book (due out 21 April) is about naruzhka or "naruzhnoe nabliudeniye"-- physical or trailing SURVEILLANCE-- its role in #RussianEspionage, as well as how Russian intel officers (RIOs) conduct counter-surveillance and surveillance detection. Inside Russia, surveillance teams from the FSB, with origins in the old 7th directorate of the KGB, monitor diplomats, suspected foreign intelligence officers, journalists, NGO workers, businesspeople, and ordinary Russians who cross the regime’s lines. They are, unfortunately, very adept at their craft. Abroad, the SVR and GRU use it more selectively— watching adversarial citizens (i.e. all diplomats from NATO), protecting their own officers, and sometimes using it to find “kompromat” (compromising material) or intimidate potential recruits via extortion. 🕵️‍♂️ But naruzhka is never just about “following.” It supports: -Countersurveillance: ensuring RIS officers are not under FBI or allied surveillance before an op-act. --RIO’s also use it for “MPs” (marshrut proverki), their term for surveillance detection or “checking routes.” --Intimidation: particularly within Russia or FSU states where they hold a very large sway like in Central Asia. Allowing their surveillance to be seen at times, a form of overt intimidation, reflects the mindset drilled into Russians from the famous saying used by citizens of the USSR: “the walls have ears, and the streets have eyes.” For universities, think tanks, and defense/security contractors, the lesson is clear: RIS surveillance is not confined to diplomats or suspect intel officers. Academics, journalists, and corporate leaders can find themselves observed or pressured when the RIS see strategic value. Awareness of surveillance indicators—and how to respond—remains essential. My aim with this series, my book, and my Cipher Brief articles is to demystify how Russian intelligence actually works, not how Hollywood portrays it. Russian intelligence operations have far-reaching implications for governments, industries, and academic institutions. We are living through a massive information crisis in which at least half the population is being systematically misinformed, making any sane national debate increasingly difficult. Without a shared factual foundation, there is nothing to discuss. People are not merely drawing different conclusions from the same evidence. They are living in entirely different realities. That is what makes the Fauci story so tragic. He caused untold harm, yet millions of people know almost nothing about it. We can debate precisely how large a role Fauci played in the creation of Covid, but half the country does not even know that Covid came from a lab. We are therefore several steps removed from the basic conditions required to have an intelligent discussion. Other facts are even more black and white. Fauci’s private diary contradicts what he told the public. His own words reveal a man of almost limitless narcissism. These are not matters of interpretation. They are documented facts. Yet we still cannot have a national conversation about them because the media either refuses to report them or actively lies about them. Anyone who is not on Twitter, which is most people, may never encounter the underlying evidence at all. The result is that I increasingly find it almost impossible to discuss any of this with ordinary people, whether family members, acquaintances, or people at events or birthday parties. Unless someone has followed the evidence closely, there is no common starting point. Before you can debate what happened, you first have to dismantle at least ten years of falsehoods and omissions. I do not know how this ends, but it is not sustainable. A country cannot function indefinitely when its people are no longer capable of discussing almost anything beyond sports on the basis of shared factual knowledge.
