I'm going to say something that might upset some people, but I believe it deeply and the evidence backs it up. The single most powerful thing Black people anywhere in the world can do to fight racism is to become collectively wealthy.  Not just individually successful, but wealthy as a community. I watched this happen with other groups. When Japan was poor, Japanese people in America were put in internment camps. When Japan got rich, suddenly everyone wanted a Toyota and Japanese culture became aspirational.  Korean Americans were targets of violence in the early 1990s. Today, after South Korea's economic rise, Korean culture is one of the most admired in the world. The pattern is so consistent it's almost boring: poverty invites contempt, prosperity commands respect. So when I hear debates about fighting racism in America, I always think the same thing. Yes, call out injustice when you see it, absolutely. But also build businesses, create wealth, and invest in your children's education like your life depends on it. Make your community so economically powerful that discrimination becomes expensive for anyone who practices it. That is how you win the game everyone else already figured out.

RENTIER CAPITALISM Our economy was never designed to allow a trickle down distribution of wealth even if $1 is made 50kobo and no president can undo this soon. In a rent taking economy, energy and capital are spent by manipulating the system rather than producing value. Occupational Licensing is an example of rentier capitalism: NBA, NMA, ICAN, COREN, NURSING COUNCIL, CIPM etc. Govt don't take the fees and dues. As a tomatoes farmer, you cannot sell your tomatoes directly at Mile 12. Some estate dues are 10 times higher than the taxes and land use charge we pay to govt. Landlords do their own, agents do their own. Digital platforms and tech monopoly are currently the biggest cartel and rent seekers! Stock market is surging! Money market is surging! Season of the rent seekers: middle class and middle men, sailing against prevailing favorable macroeconomic wind. Otedola and Dangote aren't the ones buying into apartments and shortlets boom. Its the middle class rent takers! This first revolution needed in Nigeria is a market revolution.

The very first sign that you are destined for greatness is your capacity to absorb betrayal without allowing it to poison your outlook on life. That is one of the deepest lessons from the crucifixion of Christ. A giant shouldn't notice it when kicked by a dwarf.

I can’t believe that some people are embarrassed flying economy. Do you know that ONLY 1% of the world’s population took flights internationally and 80% of the world’s population have NEVER been on a plane. What a privilege!!!

One of the biggest challenges parents talk about is this: “My child doesn’t want to study.” Here’s the truth. Repetition matters. But the type of repetition matters more. A child can repeat something for two reasons. Either because they’re forced to… or because they want to. Take school for example. A child wakes up every morning and goes to school. Not because they feel inspired. Because it’s non-negotiable. If you do something long enough, it becomes familiar. It becomes routine. But routine doesn’t automatically create desire. Desire is created when repetition is tied to a positive experience. If a child goes to school and has friends, feels competent, gets praised, enjoys one subject… now the repetition has emotional backing. Now they begin to want it. That’s the difference most parents miss. Many parents try to enforce studying through fear. “Sit down and read.” “If you don’t pass this exam…” “You must do it because I said so.” Yes, the child complies. In that moment. But that compliance is powered by fear, not ownership. And fear has an expiry date. There will come a time your child is no longer afraid of the punishment or they decide the punishment is worth it. They’ll accept the shouting. They’ll accept the consequences as long as they get to avoid the thing they dislike. You’ve seen it before. The child sits at the table with a textbook open, but their eyes aren’t reading. They’re just waiting for you to leave the room. If your entire system was built on control, it collapses the moment control weakens. What you actually want is this: A child who studies even when you’re not there. A child who picks up a book without being chased. A child who associates effort with something positive. That’s harder but it’s possible. Start with this. Create a reward structure. Not bribery. Not buying toys every week. Reward simply means reinforcing the behavior you want. Attention is a reward. Praise is a reward. Extra story time, choosing dinner, picking the family movie, sitting next to you during devotion. All rewards. When your child studies without being pushed, acknowledge it immediately. “I noticed you started your homework on your own today.” “I like how focused you were just now.” That emotional reinforcement matters. The fastest way to reduce negative behavior is to strengthen positive behavior. When studying becomes the pathway to good feelings, connection, and small privileges, the brain starts linking effort with benefit. That’s how repetition becomes internal. Over time, the child doesn’t just study to avoid punishment. They study because it feels normal. It feels rewarding. It feels like who they are. And that’s the goal. You’re not raising a child who obeys under pressure. You’re raising a child who builds habits that survive without you.

I’ll say a few things… 1. The anger, the hate, the love, the applause, the criticism, all of it is valid and I embrace it. 2. I am a world record holder which means I have attained something no one else in the world has ever done. I was recently honored and awarded by the city of New York. To be honored and received by the President and the highest office in my own country for this reason is not a crime. (It is not even a national honor by the way). I have declined many awards. Comparing me to people who have received awards and recognition from countries that have committed war crimes is at best laughable. 3. I have no interest in partisan politics because of the sensitivity of the work that I do. If that ever changes, then I would resign my role as CEO of chess in slums Africa. 4. The rhetoric that Chess in slums only exists or is relevant because of bad governance is not accurate. The real impact of our work is in the synapses. We’re using chess as a tool to teach cognition and improve academic outcomes. Using it as a social intervention tool is because those children have fallen through the cracks and cannot make it to the classrooms. This is not charity or “NGO”. What most of you measure as the most tangible impact is we just dignifying the stories of the children you see all the time on the streets but pay no attention to. The real impact here is ensuring they have the critical capacity to think for themselves and putting them through formal or vocational education. I continue to consult with educational institutions and tech companies around the world, so my work will always be relevant and whatever resource or influence that gives me, I will use all of it to serve the children who deserve a place in the world as well. 5. A visit is not an endorsement. I will visit many more people and will continue to sell my chess boards. 6. You may not understand my intentions or character because the only thing you know about me is what I let on social media. But reputation is not character. It’s been 10 long years of staying with this one thing, so I know for a fact that I have earned the benefit of the doubt. 7. Again, I embrace the love and the hate. But I care for none of it. In a decade or two, the Chess/STEM institute will stand and it will be a place where thousands of children will dream again and be educated in a way that makes them valuable to the world. All the strong opinions we have now falls flat in the face of this. 8. Finally, I appreciate everyone who has ever supported the incredible work we’ve done in the last 7 years. We have never applied or received any international grants in this time. 9. We’ve been working with the Lagos state government for about a year now to take kids from Jakande and Isale Eko off the streets. One of them recently graduated from furniture school and is living again. Our collective hurt is valid and we may disagree on politics but there are actual lives at stake and we all have a role to play in whatever capacity to stop this hemorrhage. Yes we will partner with the government to scale this impact and institutionalize it so Tunde stops being the hero of the story. It’s your tax anyway. 10. Finally I’d say this, My fight is different. I’m not on the fence. I took a stand 10 years ago for the country I want to see. The truth is I will do many more things that may challenge your perception of me, but I know my heart is in the right place and whatever rooms my vision gives me access to, I will put the dreams and needs of the children first. I live for the audience of one, and that is enough. -Tunde Onakoya

Find your own people. The one-man army is old fashioned The right people in your corner can: 1. Keep you on track: 2. Point out your blind spots: They can see those patterns you do that you don't even notice 3. Help you learn from mess-ups: You can talk through your mistakes and figure out how to do better next time. 4. Be your safety net: When things go sideways, they're there to catch you, so you don't totally crash and burn. So as you're going through, make sure it's the right people. Not the ones secretly competing with you.

We wait and act now, and trust that something, someone, whatever it is you believe in will make everything work out for your good. So you have to walk with a confidence when life takes you out of the path people assume lead to success... when you drop out of the university due to financial constraints, when you graduate at the bottom of your class, when you experience delay, when you don't get that seven-figure employment immediately after graduation, when you don't get that scholarship you really wanted, when you are fired from a job, when you find yourself in a place and a time you didn't plan......you have to believe that the dots will connect, that everything was meant to happen, that there is a bigger picture. So be patient, be unwavering in your faith that years from now, when you look back all the dots will connect. Don't live to fit the expectations of others, most times they mean well, but, as they say, the heart wants what it wants, and if it's theatre, if it's the sciences, if it's greatness that calls you, answer, follow your heart...like Father Abraham, stand up and follow that voice, even when you can't yet connect the dots. Follow your heart, we don't know where it will lead us, but we have to believe, to have faith that someday our foolishness would become stories of wisdom.
